To help us meet our ambitions and provide the best solutions to patients, UCB is currently seeking a talented individual as a Dermatology Medical Science Liaison (MSL). The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a professional who serves as a key field-based scientific partner to healthcare providers and decision-makers, medical professional associations, and internal UCB colleagues. This professional will be responsible for executing key medical strategies to enhance and positively impact patients living with chronic inflammatory diseases. This position will support our Dermatology franchise in the Immunology Patient Value Unit (PVU) in an assigned territory. Critical responsibilities included, but are not limited to:

  • Delivers clinical value propositions and engages with key decision-maker stakeholders in medical groups, IDNs, and regional payers

  • Identifies and supports potential research expansion projects/collaborations, medical advisors, and educational partnership opportunities

  • Conducts local roundtables and education programs that aim enhance Key Opinion Leaders (KOL)s understanding of unmet clinical needs

  • Maintains deep scientific knowledge in areas of Medical Dermatology (preferably autoimmune and inflammatory skin diseases)

  • Serve as a scientific expert at key medical and scientific conferences, advisory boards, clinical investigator meetings, and internal meetings.

  • Reviews and critiques scientific publications to help inform healthcare trends in Rheumatology

  • Collects, analyzes, and communicates information concerning therapeutic area, treatment options, emerging standards of care, and competitive intelligence

  • Provides effective clinical presentations to internal and external audiences and tailors presentations to meet specific audience needs through peer to peer scientific exchange

  • Assesses feasibility and serves as the primary liaison between UCB and investigator for unsolicited Investigator-Initiated Studies (IISs) from inception to publication

  • Operates at the highest level of UCB compliance and professional standards. Adherence to compliant behavior is an expectation at UCB and demonstrated by embracing ethical decision-making practices and guidelines in all aspects of our organization.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctorate degree (PharmD, MD, DO or PhD in a relevant field) required. Will consider NP/PA with clinical experience in relevant therapeutic area (Dermatology).

  • 3+ years of field medical experience strongly preferred.

  • Dermatology and/or other inflammatory disease experience preferred. Prior product launch experience also preferred.

  • Strong-track record of established relationships and demonstrated ability to identify national, regional, and local KOLs in Dermatology.

  • Basic business acumen with a solid understanding of the pharmaceutical industry

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of health economic principles and clinical trials

  • Ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts in 1:1 and group settings

  • Extensive travel (up to 75%) required, including overnights and some weekends.

  • Valid US Driver's License and with no more than 3 moving violations in the past 2 years

  • Must reside within the assigned territory

  • Must complete initial training and successfully pass all assessments within 90 days of hire

The focus of this role is field based scientific exchange (SE), for which the MSL will leverage their scientific background, industry knowledge, and business acumen to act as a scientific resource to scientific experts (SCEs), while gathering insights that inform Scientific Objectives (SOs) and strategic decision making by Medicine. Within their territory, MSLs are responsible for establishing, cultivating, and maintaining relationships with SCEs. Further, the MSL functions as an extension of the medical information group to provide product and pipeline therapeutic area expertise to SCEs and HCPs, and as a scientific expert to internal stakeholders within Medicine and Commercial groups at BIPI. The MSL is a collaborative member of BIPI, who is expected to communicate seamlessly with other members of the field based organization and perform all activities in a compliant manner. Duties & Responsibilities * Customer Interactions and Scientific Exchange: * The overarching objective of the MSL is to be in the field conducting scientific exchange with prioritized SCEs. Therefore, the principal effort of the MSL will be focused on planning, preparing for, and conducting field based interactions and scientific exchange in support of the TA Scientific Objectives (SOs). * Specific aspects of the role include, but may not be limited to: * Proactively conduct scientific exchange with SCEs to support the SOs; as guided by their local tactical medical engagement plan. * Establish and maintain scientific relationships with SCEs, while developing a strong understanding of territory specific healthcare systems and clinical practices related to patient care, disease management, treatment protocols, and research interests. * Act as a scientific resource to SCEs and HCPs to reactively answer specific questions on TA or disease state topics and BI compounds through scientific exchange. * Provide disease state education on topics related to TA Scientific Objectives. * Act as a scientific resource to Scientific Experts at payer accounts and integrated delivery networks when requested. * Collaboration: * The MSL collaborates with the field based medicine team, appropriate Commercial personnel, and the broader organization – in a seamless and efficient manner. Specific aspects include, but may not be limited to: * Collaborate within the TA MSL Team on all aspects of planning, execution, sharing of best practices, and insight generation related discussion in order to understand the breadth of insights, potential impact, and to stimulate scientific exploration. * Collaborate with field based Commercial personnel, as appropriate and in a compliant manner. * Collaborate to provide field based scientific expertise for key accounts, as required. Learn about new and evolving customers and the changing medical needs of such customers. * Collaborate with Commercial personnel to provide scientific support for internal and external activities where there is a defined and appropriate scientific role for FBM. * Collaborate with FBM Operations, as appropriate. * Collaborate with the broader Medicine organization, to provide scientific support and communicate scientific insights. * Planning and Support: * Develop a tactical customer-centric medical engagement plan for their geography in alignment with management, and provide internal and external scientific support – as required. Specific aspects of the role include, but may not be limited to: * Proactively develop a territory specific medical engagement plan for scientific exchange with prioritized SCEs, which supports the TA Scientific Objectives (SOs). * Proactively assess SCEs that are appropriate to interact with as part of the medical engagement plan. * Identify and communicate challenging gaps between BIPI and customer expectations, needs, and priorities. * Proactively monitor and adjust tactical medical engagement plan to better achieve TA Scientific Objectives. * Support identification of scientific materials required to effectively conduct scientific exchange. * Develop scientific materials to support scientific exchange, as directed by MSL Team Lead. * Support identification of training needs to effectively engage in scientific exchange. * Maintain regular communication (field based, virtual meetings, etc.) with the regional TA MSL Team, to review ongoing activities and insights, share best practices, and communicate learnings. * Interact with current BI study investigators to maintain site engagement and address any unsolicited trial related questions, and with potential study investigators to discuss potential BI study concepts or protocols, as requested. * Facilitate logistical communications between BIPI and HCPs regarding Investigator Initiated Studies (IIS), External Collaborative Research, company study contracts, etc., as requested. * Provide additional scientific support for Medicine and Scientific Affairs activities in alignment with the local work instruction, which may include but are not limited to support for scientific congresses and medical information. * Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in specific TA through continuous learning and knowledge of the TA related scientific literature. * Insight Generation and Reporting: * Identify, document, discuss, and communicate scientific insights as guided by the TA Scientific Objectives. Specific aspects include, but may not be limited to: * Document field generated scientific insights within appropriate system(s), and communicate to appropriate internal stakeholders, as required. * Participate in the discussion of scientific insights gathered by the TA MSL team, in order to understand the breadth of insights, potential impact, and to stimulate scientific exploration, as directed by management. * Support communication of scientific insights across the Medical and Commercial organizations, as directed by management. * Identify and communicate operational understanding of healthcare systems with field based BI teams, including changes in the healthcare landscape and trends impacting delivery within the territory (i.e. new stakeholders impacting the delivery of or access to care). Requirements: * Experience and Education: * BSc, from an accredited institution, required, and in addition fulfill one of the following education levels and experience criteria: * Advanced science / clinical degree from an accredited institution (PharmD, M.D., DO, Ph.D.) with one (1) or more years' of relevant clinical or therapeutic experience (preferred), OR * Masters level degree, from an accredited institution, in health sciences with three (3) or more years' of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience, OR * Combined BSc. with a MBA, or BSN with a MBA, from an accredited institution and five (5) or more years' of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience, OR * A PA, from an accredited institution, with three (3) or more years' of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience. * Other medically qualified licensure (e.g. RPh, Respiratory Therapist) with seven (7) or more years of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience. * Two (2) or more years' experience as a MSL within the respective therapeutic area with primary emphasis on field based scientific exchange – preferred. * Knowledge of regional specific healthcare systems and clinical practices related to patient care – preferred. * Strong communication and relationship development skills. * Able to readily interpret scientific data, understand the potential impact of data on clinical approaches and research needs, and communicate scientific data to broad audiences. * Position is field-based with over 50% required travel to manage assigned geography.
