Job Summary and Description:

Performs advanced engineering/scientific analysis with minimal direction and supervision. Beginning to demonstrate creativity and ingenuity in providing technical solutions. Works directly with EPRI staff and high interaction with members and industry.

  • Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.

  • Conducts independent research and begins to manage small, less complex projects

  • Provides technical advice and counsel to other professionals within EPRI.

  • Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.

  • Reviews progress and evaluates results. Makes changes in methods, design or equipment where necessary.

  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.


Bachelor's Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 4-5 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Required some supervision and guidance to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects

  • Responsible for the success of individual projects

  • Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research

  • May participate in multiple projects

  • Individual contributor

  • May present research results to advisors or technical staff/members

  • Starting to develop technical depth in 1-2 areas

  • Focus on projects within a program

Additional Job Information:

For years, EPRI has led the industry in deploying advanced technologies, such as smart PV inverters and distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS). We are seeking talented individuals to take our research to the next level as we work with utilities to investigate the latest technologies and the challenges of real-world implementation. This position will be involved in a wide variety of activities on a daily basis, that might include:

  • Designing experiments for new technologies in both the laboratory and field.

  • Developing scope for and executing power system modeling and simulation activities

  • Solving systems integration challenges with utilities, manufacturers, and other research organizations

  • Applying the latest techniques in data analytics, machine learning, and advanced visualization to communicate experimental results to a wide-range of audiences

  • Presenting research findings directly to members as well as the scientific and engineering community through meetings, conferences, and publication.

In order to more quickly and holistically address member needs, we are looking for project engineers that will be able to work on-location with utility members on high impact projects. After a period of acclimation (either remote or in Knoxville, TN), this role will require significant travel, primarily to utility companies and renewables project sites over the course of various assignments.

Preferred Education and Skills:
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Related Field

  • An interest in the electric power industry, and an inquisitive attitude about new technology and emerging research;

  • Good writing skills and a native (or bilingual) proficiency in English;

  • Ability to operate independently, reaching out for guidance when necessary

  • Comfort with extensive travel and changing work environments

Ideal Candidate:

  • Education or prior experience in the field of power systems, power electronics, or control systems

  • Programming experience in modern languages used for data analysis or machine learning, such as MATLAB, Python, or R.

  • Power system modeling or analysis background, and familiarity with industry or research tools

  • Prior work experience in related fields (full-time or internship)

  • Prior work experience at a utility or similar environment

  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to distill complex ideas for a variety of audiences

  • Previous experience publishing research results in conference proceedings or scientific journals

  • Prior international experience and an interest in working with a diverse member base

This program provides technical direction for the startup and restart of complex nuclear and high-hazard non-nuclear Facilities, Activities, and Operations, as well as performing detailed technical reviews of CNS Nuclear Safety Analysis Reports, Technical Safety Requirements, Process Hazard Analysis and supporting documentation.</p><p>The role of the Readiness Leader (RL) is to provide self-directed, multi-disciplinary technical leadership to ensure that startups and restarts of a wide range of specialized operational systems are accomplished meeting operational readiness expectations.</p><p><br></p><p>In accomplishing this role, the RL will be responsible to:</p><ul> <li>Serve as the technical expert for operational readiness ensuring that physical and administrative boundaries are defined, and review level determinations are completed;</li> <li>Resolve technical problems and make decisions and recommendations to the project team and senior management;</li> <li>Ensure that integrated planning across multiple organizations and individuals is accomplished to identify the set of tasks needed to attain operational readiness;</li> <li>Ensure that tasks required for attaining operational readiness are fully accomplished with high quality products that can withstand the scrutiny of contractually required operational readiness verification reviews;</li> <li>Serve as the team leader or team member of review teams that perform readiness reviews to verify operational readiness or Safety Basis Implementation Validation Reviews to verify that the requirements, assumptions, and controls from safety basis documents (DSA and TSR) are correctly captured in the documents and are fully implemented; and</li> <li>Provide expert based training on the CNS Readiness Assurance Program to a variety of individuals including; Facility, Operations, Program and Project Managers and mentor less experienced.</li> </ul><ul> </ul><p>The RL is accountable to the:</p><ul> <li>Project or Program Manager and Site Manager for startups being operationally ready prior to the conduct of a readiness review;</li> <li>Production, Facility, Operations, and/or Mission Engineering Manager for completing IVRs for Safety Basis changes subject to the IVR process; and</li> <li>Site Manager or delegate for completing readiness reviews</li> </ul><ul> </ul><p>The RL is authorized to:</p><ul> <li>Represent the Readiness Assurance Program in meetings;</li> <li>Establish expectations with appropriate Managers responsible for meeting defined readiness performance criteria; and</li> <li>Provide technical direction to other Readiness Assurance staff.</li> </ul><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><ul> <li>Bachelor’s Degree preferably in engineering or a physical science discipline plus 15 years of nuclear experience in either a technical or operational role, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience (e.g., Non-technical Bachelor’s degree and 20 years’ experience, Master’s Degree and 12 years’ experience or Doctors Degree and 10 years’ experience)</li> <li>Combination of technical and operational readiness experience and skills, the successful candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in a combination of conducting operational readiness confirmation reviews (Readiness Assessments, Implementation Verification Reviews, and Operational Readiness Reviews) and/or in providing leadership in the attainment and validation of operational readiness for nuclear or high-hazard startup or restarts (preferably within the DOE or commercial nuclear power industry)</li> <li>Experience in doing both the reviews and validation of the attainment of operational readiness is highly desirable and may be given greater credit over more general and less relevant experience.</li> <li>Familiarity with the requirements of 10 CFR 830, Nuclear Safety Management, and experience with implementing requirements and controls in approved DOE Documented Safety Analysis and Technical Safety Requirements documents is highly desired.</li> <li>Active DOE Q clearance is preferred</li> </ul><p><br></p><p>Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and/or clearances requirements, US citizenship is required.</p><p>Navarro is an equal-opportunity employer.
