(Includes Scheduled Overtime - $2,864.69 , based on a 12-Hour rotating shift)

Rotating 12-Hour Schedule Every Four (4) Months - Weekends, Evenings, and Holidays

The County of Volusia is seeking candidates for Deputies with the Sheriff's Office. This position will be located in various locations throughout Volusia County, and will be responsible for general public safety with a primary emphasis on the protection of life and property and the routine enforcement of laws and regulations. Area of assignment is at the discretion of the Sheriff.

NOTE: Candidates who have already successfully completed the Florida Basic Law Enforcement Academy and passed the State of Florida exam, or those who are currently attending a Florida Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLE) may apply.

Illustrative Duties

(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)

  • Answers a wide variety of calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, domestic disturbances, misdemeanors or felonies.

  • May perform duties of a school resource officer.

  • Serves writs, warrants, summonses and civil papers.

  • Enforces traffic laws and regulations on all roads within Volusia County.

  • Conducts preliminary investigations, obtains witnesses and evidence, makes arrests and transports prisoners to and from confinement areas.

  • Testifies in court relative to arrests made.

  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational duties.

  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.

  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.

  • Responds to emergency situations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from high school or completion of a GED, AND must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license, AND completion of the Minimum Standards Course required by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission for police officers.

Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLE): Applicants will be considered if they are currently enrolled in a Florida Law Enforcement Academy (BLE). Applicant must obtain a passing score on the State of Florida Law Enforcement Certification exam, prior to appointment

Must meet the qualifications for employment set forth in section 943.13, Florida Statute which includes:

  • At least nineteen (19) years of age

  • A citizen of the United States

  • A high school graduate or its equivalent

  • No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving perjury or a false statement

  • No dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States

  • Fingerprints on file with the employing agency

  • Passed a physical examination by a licensed physician based on specifications established by the commission

  • Good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission.

  • Must also possess a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of appointment.

  • Applicants will undergo a polygraph, psychological examination and background investigation.

  • Must successfully complete the Volusia County Sheriff's Office Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP).

  • Must successfully pass shooting assessment and physical test (PAT) to qualify for an interview.

Based on the above qualifications for employment set forth in section 943.13, Florida Statute, the Sheriff's Office reserves the right to conduct background screening on eligible candidates prior to conditional offer of employment.

Tobacco Policy: It is this organization's policy that individuals hired into special risk positions may not use any form of tobacco at any time, whether on or off duty, as a condition of employment. Candidates must be nicotine-free by the time of pre-employment physical/drug exam, including nicotine-containing products used in tobacco replacement therapies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Skills in the operation, maintenance and use of specialized police equipment.

  • Knowledge of local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations effective in the County.

  • Knowledge of first aid methods and general emergency methods.

  • Considerable knowledge of the geography of the County including its political subdivisions and road network.

  • Able to keep informed of the current changes in all applicable laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and procedures.

  • Able to interview witnesses, gather evidence and assist in investigations.

  • Able to testify in court in a professional manner relative to arrests or other police matters.

  • Able to comprehend and execute written and oral instructions.

  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Able to work under stressful conditions.

  • Able to interact effectively with others.

  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Prior to appointment all eligibles will be required to meet the stringent medical standards established by the County of Volusia. As part of the pre-employment medical examination, eligibles will be required to participate in the Drug Screening Program.

Physical Demands:

  • Heavy to Very Heavy work.

  • Ability to run a minimum of fifty (50) yards.

  • Ability to climb a minimum of six (6) feet.

  • Ability to jump a minimum of six (6) feet.

  • Ability to drag, lift, carry a minimum of 150 pounds.

  • Ability to crawl a minimum of ten (10) yards.

  • Ability to swim a minimum of fifty (50) yards with a flotation device.

  • Ability to operate emergency vehicles.

  • Ability to traverse all types of terrain, i.e. urban, woods, swamp, hills.

  • Ability to use restraints, i.e. handcuffs, hobble.

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.

  • Ability to bend, crouch, reach, see, hear, smell, pull, push, stand, kneel, handle, stoop, balance, talk, feel; finger dexterity.

  • Ability to effectuate an arrest with or without resistance.

  • Ability to perform shift work, 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

  • Major visual functions are acuity, far and near, field of vision, and accommodation. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.

Environmental Demands: Inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including heat, humidity, rain, cold, fog, sleet. Possible exposure to hazardous materials and conditions; toxic conditions, fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, confined areas, animal/human waste.

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures, journals and documents; legal documents; maps and layouts; memos, reports, summaries and evaluations. Ability to perform basic mathematical functions. Ability to write complex documents relaying information, data, and details. Ability to speak clearly and concisely to layman.

This position is located at various locations throughout Volusia County, Florida, and will be responsible for specialized work in the regulation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in conjunction with the movement of children to and from school, and is limited to those hours during which the school is opening and closing. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.) * Places school sentinel warnings in the roadway at designated places near crossing points and removes them when no longer required. * Regulates vehicular and pedestrian traffic at designated crossings to permit children to cross safely. * Reports all traffic hazards near school crossings to the supervisor or proper authorities. * Reports flagrant traffic violators and/or suspicious persons loitering in the school crossing areas. * Attends work on a regular and consistent basis. * Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances. * Responds to emergency situations. * Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements Completion of the 10th grade. Working personal telephone (cell phone or landline).
