Performs general law enforcement work in order to preserve public peace and order, to protect lives, property and rights of the public, and to enforce the laws of the United States of America, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the County of Spotsylvania. Assures appropriate custody and control of prisoners; protects and assists the courts and serves civil process; patrols County streets and neighborhoods to deter crime or apprehend and/or arrest violators or suspects; responds to calls for law enforcement assistance and gathers information for criminal investigations.

A Deputy may be assigned to any division of the Sheriff's Office as needed. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. This position is essential.

Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed. Rotating shifts, nights and weekends.

Required to be Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Law Enforcement Officer (DCJS) certified.

Special Duties & Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The essential job functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Reduces the commission of crimes and maintains law enforcement by patrolling throughout the County. Patrols County streets and neighborhoods. Inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments.

Monitors radio calls, communicates with radio dispatcher and responds to complaints, reports of criminal events, requests for law enforcement, and domestic or public disputes. Apprehends and or arrests persons who violate federal, State or County codes and laws.

Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects; performs searches of people, vehicles and buildings; prepares investigative reports of findings, facts and related information; makes arrests and processes arrested suspects. Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis for probable cause for criminal acts; and testifies in court.

Enforces traffic laws and regulations. Detects traffic violators, performs traffic accident investigations and makes reports.

Facilitates the movement of traffic and pedestrians around accidents, disabled traffic control devices or heavily congested areas. Assists disabled motorists. Directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings.

Serves civil and criminal documents. Serves as court Bailiff as requested and ensures security and orderly behavior in courts.

Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergency scenes and disaster areas.

Assists persons who are in physical or mental danger.

Reads, comprehends, and interprets legal and non-legal documents.

Completes and/or reviews paperwork documenting shift activities, offenses and incidents, victim and suspect statements and other related information.

Assists other law enforcement personnel and agencies.

Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image for the Sheriff's Office and to build cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community.

Responds to questions from the public with regard to all issues concerning public safety and correct procedures and processes.

Maintains assigned vehicle and issued equipment including firearms.

Transports prisoners and mental patients.

May participate in special public information programs.

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training & Experience:Applicants must be: a U.S. citizen, 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid Virginia driver's license, and meet all other minimum qualifications for law enforcement officers as established by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Applicants must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to prepare clear, comprehensive reports and deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public.

They must possess the ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances. They also must have excellent physical agility, endurance and skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle. Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Law Enforcement Officer (DCJS) certification required.

Special Requirements:
Note: Candidate selected will be required to complete a hiring process that includes: written test, work performance test, preliminary background check, oral interview, polygraph examination, background investigation, physical, and drug screen.

Employee dispatches emergency personnel and public safety officials to emergency situations throughout the County. Reports to the Communications Supervisor. This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed. Successfully complete a preliminary background check, work performance test (2 hour test to include typing), oral interview, polygraph examination, background investigation and drug screen (approx. 84/hrs. bi-weekly, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., rotating shifts, nights and weekends). Submitted applications will be considered for current vacancies and assist to create an eligibility list. 9-1-1 emergency dispatch experienced applicants preferred. Special Duties & Responsibilities:ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Receives emergency calls for Sheriff, fire, rescue and other assistance; adopts appropriate course of action, in accordance with State and federal laws, local ordinances, policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as within established chain of command. * Interprets and prioritizes E-911 calls for appropriate actions; determines nature of call and type of assistance needed; routes calls for expedient handling. * Dispatches appropriate Sheriff's department, fire and/or rescue units using E-911 radio and telephone systems; provides information on location, type of emergency or any other relevant information; provides geographical information, including subdivision names, cross-streets, landmarks, etc.; provides pre-arrival instructions by telephone as needed. * Operates a variety of emergency service communications systems; utilizes two-way radio system in accordance with federal and state laws and guidelines; documents all malfunctions in communication system and related equipment; reports errors in geobase and/or database. * Communicates with a variety of public safety officials and personnel, medical personnel, and the media. * Monitors and conducts tests of the County's natural warning and alarm systems. * Maintains records of calls; logs all dispatches, recording time of call and dispatch, dispatch action and disposition of calls or requests; maintains confidentiality of all matters concerning Sheriff, fire, rescue and other public safety and emergency operations. * Participates in continuous training program to improve communications and skills, including hazardous materials awareness, CPR, pre-arrival medical instructions, etc. * Verifies warrants and accesses computer to provide information to law enforcement personnel; enters information on stolen property and missing persons in national and state computer; transmits computer responses on all hit confirmations. * Answers administrative telephone lines for Crime Solvers, Criminal Investigative Division, Civil Process, Warrants Division and Sheriff's Office after hours. * Supervises shift staff in the absence of the Supervisor as needed. * Performs other related duties as required.
