The Spaceship Company (TSC) is an affiliate of Virgin Galactic as a space-system manufacturing organization. Headquartered at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, it is building and testing a fleet of WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceships that, together, form Virgin Galactic's human spaceflight system. Like many Virgin companies across the world, its team of over 400 talented and dedicated engineers, technicians and professionals are drawn together by a willingness to disrupt and challenge the status quo and deliver innovative aerospace solutions to our customers' needs. Who You AreThe Spaceship Company (TSC) is seeking an experienced and inspired Deputy Program Manager to support the SpaceShipTwo (SS2) program, for the modifications, upgrades and in-service support of SpaceShipTwo. This role will be responsible for managing schedule planning, manufacturing coordination, material sourcing and acceptance, coordination, budget planning and status reporting for all SpaceShipTwo program tasks to support delivery and in service support of our client, Virgin Galactic. This position will work closely with the SS2 Program Manager to lead and manage the cross functional organization that supports SpaceShipTwo to ensure that the program requirements are met.
The Deputy Program Manager provides direction and oversight of the SS2 program goals on behalf of the Program Manager
Work with SS2 Program Manager to deliver project on time and budget
Provides overarching manufacturing coordination for the SS2 Program
Work with the scheduling team, manufacturing engineering team and production control to assure smooth transition from engineering release to the manufacturing team and into inventory
Identify tooling, materials, resources, vendors, planning, and engineering to work in the most efficient manner possible. Work with engineering, supply chain, tooling, etc. to harmonize the schedule
Work with production control to assure work flow, jobs, outsourced jobs, and required materials are available to support schedule
Coordinate the efforts between all manufacturing functions and vendors to properly support the build schedule
Resolve conflicts in schedule and resources with functional managers
Manage the program risk assessment process
Conduct briefings and review for the program team and company leadership
What you bring
5+ years of demonstrated program leadership experience with planning, engineering, production, assembly and systems integration teams, at least 3 of which were in a managerial role
Experience with composites fabrication, assembly and systems integration
Excellent knowledge of component assembly, both subassembly and final top level assembly
Experience with aerospace systems integration, large-scale test and flight test
Experience and/or training in lean principals and leading or participating in process improvement workshops or kaizen events
Working knowledge of configuration management practices and quality management processes
Experience with manufacturing based ERP systems a plus
Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the proven ability to lead, motivate and build teams
Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, combined with a strong commercial acumen to measure the potential impact of each decision
Excellent organizational skills, easily capable of effectively juggling and completing multiple tasks at the same time and thrives under pressure
Highly autonomous with effective delegation skills
Extreme attention to detail and continual pursuit of perfection
