Under the general direction of the Deputy Labor Commissioner IV, the Incumbent plans, organizes, directs, and supervises the work of a specialized investigative unit of the Public Information program. The Incumbent is responsible for planning, organizing and reviewing the work of the employees supervised.

This position requires exceptional skill in coordinating the activity of a statewide investigative unit and working together with internal and external stakeholders in order to effectively and productively advance the Labor Commissioner's Office law enforcement efforts. In addition, provides and promotes outreach to educate the public and engages community stakeholders to address issues and build better enforcement awareness. The Incumbent will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to the Mission and the Vision of the Division.

This is a first full supervisory level.

This position will be located in either of the following locations:

Sacramento

This position will supervise the following locations: Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland.

The incumbent will have a hybrid work environment including in-person and remote work consistent with operational needs and may work in a high-rise office building. The incumbent will be required to sit for long periods of time while in the office and/or while driving to and from field activities.

Field work is required within the State when visiting assigned field offices and attending or conducting trainings. Travel may be via land or air and may require overnight stay. The incumbent will have access to a state vehicle, laptop computer, printer, cellular phone, and other equipment necessary to stay in touch with the assigned field offices and their staff.

The assigned state vehicle will be parked at a departmental designated location. Requirement to visit assigned field offices during the COVID-19 Pandemic is flexible such that these visits can be conducted via Teams with camera activated in lieu of in-person appearance. The incumbent will also traverse various ground surfaces and/or buildings while managing between 2-5 lbs of equipment (laptop or tablet, and chargers) while out in the field training field staff.

Department Information

The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) was established in 1927. Its mission is to improve working conditions for California's wage earners and to advance opportunities for profitable employment in California. DIR administers and enforces laws governing wages, workplace safety and health, apprenticeship training programs, and medical care and other benefits for injured workers.
