The City of Pasadena Department of Transportation isseeking a dynamic transportation professional with a breadth of experience in implementing transportation strategies and tools to serve as Deputy Director to help coordinate, guide, and implement both day-to-day and long-term strategic efforts.The currentvacancy is in the Administration Division of the Department of Transportation.

Please note:This examination is authorized as Promotional and Open Competitive, with the promotional eligibility list taking precedence.

The ideal candidate will be a technical expert in their field, preferably in the public sector or demonstrating substantial experience and understating of public sector work. The candidate will have recent experience working on a diverse range of multi-modal projects that sustain, promote, and enhance accessibility, connectivity, and mobility in the community. This person will demonstrate an understanding of the "Big Picture" and community dynamic, possess strong leadership skills, possess written and oral communication skills, decision-making skills, and the ability to multi-task as well as a strong work ethic.

Essential Functions

  • Reports to the Director of Transportation.

  • Responsible for advancing the department's goals and objectives as identified in the Mobility Element.

  • Supports the Director in developing and executing short term Department goals.

  • Supports the Director in developing and executing the Department's Operating and Capital budgets.

  • Oversees the Mobility Engineering and Operations division, and Multimodal Planning division of the Department.

  • Includes oversight of the City's Traffic Management Center, Development Review process, Active Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering.

  • Responsible for development of work plans, employee evaluations and professional development.

  • Oversees the development and implementation of the City's Capital Improvement Program.

  • Coordinates with local, state and federal agencies to advance the department's objectives.

  • Establishes strong working relationships with local community organizations and businesses.

  • Acts in the Director's absence.

Qualification Guidelines

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public administration, transportation planning, urban planning, traffic engineering or a related field, AND;
  • Seven years of experience in urban planning, transportation planning or transportation engineering, three years of which includes supervisory responsibility.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Transportation experience, specifically in transportation funding sources, public sector experience and a Master's degree is highly desirable.

SELECTION PROCESS

The tentative selection process will consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, a panel interview, a department-level interview, and a work preferences questionnaire.
