Deputy Director of Special Education

The International Institute for the Brain (iBRAIN) is one of the largest brain-injury special education programs in the world, based in New York City (locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn; Washington, D.C.), and is expanding to add an out-patient clinic, as well as growing its research efforts for the brain injury and brain-based disorders community. iBRAIN's mission is to research, develop, and implement special education and related services for students who present with a wide range of impairments due to brain injury and/or brain-based disorders.

Position Title:

Deputy Director of Special Education

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education at iBRAIN, with wide latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, the Deputy Director of Special Education will ensure the academic standards and implementation of each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) in the development of such IEPs and regularly assess its implementation. In addition, this person will also assist in developing new curriculum and programs for iBRAIN-Academy. This person will also have management responsibilities within the two current school-based programs located in New York City. Desirable attributes include clinical/educational experience with acquired brain injury, management of interdisciplinary teams, a strong foundation of research skills, and keen strategic focus. The successful individual is a natural leader who fosters an environment that promotes innovation and continuous improvement, effective, transparent communication with key constituents and stakeholders, and accountability for results.

Key Relationships:

The Special Education Deputy Director works closely with the staff, management, parents, donors, doctors, educators, therapists, media, and the brain injury community at-large.

Salary Range:

$95,000-$115,000 (based on experience)

Job Type:

Full time; In-person (no remote/hybrid)

Location(s):

New York (Manhattan and/or Brooklyn) and Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of Management Team in order to fulfill the organization's mission

  • Oversee Associate Special Education and Paraprofessional Directors across all programs

  • Assist in the development of each student's IEP, as part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Ensure the academic standards are maintained and quality assurance for each student's program through regular monitoring, assessing, and training

  • Enhance current programs and development of new curriculum and assessments to ensure the use of evidence-based practices

  • Develop and implement professional development programs to ensure adherence to organizational standards of service, policies, and procedures

  • Develop new programming to improve the student, staff, and parents' experiences

  • Recruit, hire, and retain competent and qualified staff

  • Evaluate employee performance

  • Monitor compliance with special education legal guidelines

  • Ensure compliance and follow through with directives, policies, and procedures pertaining to education and related documents

  • Report emergent issues or concerns relating to students, policies, procedures, or documents to pertinent supervisor in a timely manner

  • Facilitate regular communication within and between departments

  • Work with iBRAIN's Postgraduate Continuing Education Program to identify and develop internal trainings for special education and support staff.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in special education

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of special education leadership

  • New York State special education certification and/or eligibility for such certification, as well as other state certifications, as needed.

  • Experience working with students with wide range of impairments due to brain injury and/or brain-based disorders

  • Experience supporting and advocating for students with disabilities and their families

  • Research and/or presentation experience at state/national/international conferences.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Strong public speaking ability

  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy

  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Transparent and high integrity leadership

  • High-level strategic thinking and planning

  • Ability to envision and convey the organization's strategic future to the staff, management, volunteers, and donors

  • Ability to effectively communicate the organization's mission to donors, volunteers, and the overall community

  • MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR

Hours:

Monday through Friday, typically 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., with occasional prolonged and irregular hours based on leadership/management responsibilities.
