PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The Primary function of the Deputy Director of Arts & Culture will be to serve as the second in command for the Department of Arts & Culture and help to expand the department's leadership capacity. The person in this role will assist the Director in leading, coordinating, and overseeing various cultural programs, events, policies, budgets, and staff.

This is an exciting leadership opportunity to play a pivotal role in promoting and enhancing the city's cultural vitality and services to residents. The position serves as a key liaison between local government, arts organizations, artists and creatives and the broader community to develop and implement equitable and accessible initiatives that foster cultural enrichment, spiritual uplift, and cultural equity in the arts. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In coordination with the Director, oversees the administration and management of arts programs, including budgeting, staffing, facilities, and operations. Help develop and implement strategic initiatives and policies to promote departmental goals and long-term planning.

Assists in the development of departmental annual budgets; assists with analysis and monitoring budgets to ensure services are appropriate and effective. Supervises public art and film projects. Assists with management of staff and facilities.

Establishes and maintains successful relationships with other City departments, agencies, Cultural Affairs Commission and Board of Alders. Assists with planning and facilitating community events and initiatives. Serves as an advocate for the department within the government and the broader community, representing the department at public, private, and civic events.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Arts, Art administration, Arts & Entertainment Management, Public Administration, or an Arts-related field; minimum of 5 years' experience in cultural programming, arts management, or closely related fields, with demonstrated leadership and project management experience.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Experience leading teams, including but not limited to interns and project managers. Strong understanding of the local arts and culture landscape, as well as broader trends and issues impacting the cultural sector statewide and nationally.

Excellent communication skills, networking, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage diverse stakeholders and build partnerships and strategic relationships. Proficiency in budget management, grant writing, and fundraising strategies. Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and policies governing cultural institutions and events.

Experience with arts marketing and promotions and cultural advocacy Ability to plan and execute complex projects effectively, managing multiple tasks and priorities. Strong commitment to cultural equity and a track record of promoting access to the arts to historically under resourced communities. Flexibility, creativity, and a passion for advancing the role of the arts and culture in community development and civic life. Must possess strong computer literacy skills that include Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media savvy.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This job will require working occasional weekends and nights for special events. Must have valid, current driver's license as some travel in the City will be required. Internal only - open only to current City of New Haven employees meeting minimum requirements.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, 'Tested' position. This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. * salary listed effective 07/01/24.

Bargaining agreements available to review HERE. General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a 90-day probationary period.
