Environment and Planning works to protect, restore, expand, and manage New York City's green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Environment and Planning division includes Central Forestry programs, Forestry Operations, the Natural Resources Group, Nurseries and Planning teams.

Major Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Chief of Contracts and Administration for Environment and Planning, with wide latitude for independent judgment and initiative, plan, supervise, implement, coordinate and evaluate all administrative programs for the Environment and Planning division.

  • Plan and coordinate human resource activities including recruitment, hiring, onboarding and performance evaluations for Forestry Operations staff.

  • Monitor headcounts, vacancy reports and personnel changes for Forestry Operations Teams.

  • Serve as a division liaison with Personnel, Budget, Payroll and Timekeeping, Benefits, Labor Relations and Health and Safety offices.

  • Support Citytime needs for Forestry Operations. Track employees' compensatory time, annual leave, sick leave and overtime.

  • Support management for Forestry Operations facilities including regular maintenance, repair and improvements.

  • Investigate and resolve discipline and health and safety related issues as they arise.

  • Oversee the management and operations of the division's fleet, including preventive maintenance, repairs, salvage, parts procurement, acquisitions and small equipment.

  • Oversee and monitor budgets and monitor all purchasing requests.

  • Train and mentor staff in various professional development and health and safety topics.

  • Represent the Agency and division at meetings, hearings, conferences and other venues. Communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of management.

Minimum Qualifications

1.A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

2.High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

3.Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

1.Detailed knowledge of agency structure and government operations understanding of the mission and business of urban park planning and natural resource management. 2. Excellent communication, administrative, supervisory, analytical, technical, writing, and proof-reading skills. 3. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. 4. Excellent project-management skills, including organization, discipline, attention to detail and follow-up. 5. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
