JOB TITLE: Department Chairperson, Mathematics

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Curriculum, Instruction and Staff Development

LOCATION: SHS

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Math Department Chairperson is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of curriculum, instruction and assessment in Mathematics for grades six through twelve, as well as to assist the building principal with the supervision and evaluation of teachers within the department.

The primary goal of the Math Department Chairperson is to ensure that the instruction and subject matter meets the academic and social needs of each pupil as well as the curricular needs as established by the Scituate Public Schools and the Massachusetts Department of Education Frameworks for Math. To accomplish this goal, the Department Chairperson shall work cooperatively with the other department chairpersons, K-5 curriculum coordinators, teachers in his/her department, principals, Central Office administrators, and the system-wide Curriculum Leadership Team and Professional Development Committee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate designated curriculum areas.

  • Develop long-range plans for curriculum evaluation (formative and summative) and revision.

  • Interview teacher candidates and make appropriate recommendations to the principal.

  • Investigate interdisciplinary relationships and cooperate with other department chairpersons in their implementation.

  • Visit classes to keep informed about curriculum, instruction and assessment activities and provide assistance in the teaching and learning process when necessary.

  • Assist with the development and calibration of common assessments and oversee the collection of student assessment data.

  • Participate in school and/or grade level data teams.

  • Along with the building principals, supervise and evaluate teachers.

  • Confer with other department chairpersons and curriculum coordinator to assure system-wide program coordination.

  • Conduct regular department meetings with teachers.

  • Involve teachers in curriculum revisions.

  • Oversee the review process and propose curriculum materials for adoption as needed.

  • Meet regularly as a member of a system-wide curriculum committee, chaired by the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Staff Development to:

evaluate present programs; discuss new materials and programs; review progress of new programs in each school; discuss budgetary needs of existing and future programs;

plan for in-service workshops; and assure system-wide program coordination.

  • Remain current in best practices in subject matter and evaluate and implement new teaching techniques, strategies and methods of learning within the department.

  • Ensure consistent approaches to curriculum, instruction and assessment are employed across all classrooms within the department.

  • Attend pertinent meetings and conferences, such as the Curriculum Leadership Team, Professional Development Committee, Secondary and Elementary Leadership Teams when requested, School Committee when requested, job-alike groups, and other trainings or meetings on request of the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.

  • Share with teachers new developments and technologies in the designated subject areas.

  • Prepare program-related budget requests with teachers; work with principals to establish priorities; consult with principals to determine specific items and programs to be purchased.

  • Channel to teachers complaints, directives, requests and suggestions.

  • Manage the department supplies, textbooks, equipment and supplementary materials along with maintaining an up-to-date inventory of the same.

  • Plan in-service workshops and demonstrations for department and, where appropriate, non-department members in conjunction with the system-wide in-service committee.

  • This position will have a supervisory and teaching component. Percentage of split will be identified in the contract.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.

QUALIFICATIONS-REQUIRED:

  • Master's Degree.

  • A minimum of three years of successful teaching experience or its equivalent.

  • Specialized knowledge; ability to secure cooperation and participation of teachers; skill as a classroom teacher; and demonstrated leadership and initiative.

  • Administrative ability to organize and assign tasks.

  • Massachusetts Educator License in Math

  • Massachusetts Educator License as Supervisor/Director or Principal/Asst Principal 5-8 or 9-12

  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

TERMS: Unit B, 204 days, STA Contract.
