Diagnoses and treats dentaldisease, injury, and deformities. Consults appropriate professionals on choice of medications. Develops policies and procedures for dentalhealth and care. Writes reports. Performs related work as required.
DETAILED STATEMENT OFDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Diagnoses dental diseases, injuries and deformities by examining teeth, gums and soft tissue to detect cavities or abnormal tissues by taking x-rays, by making impressions of teeth, and by charting the condition of the mouth and teeth.
Treats dental diseases, injuries or deformities by restoring and/or extracting teeth as necessary, checking and adjusting bite, prescribing drugs for dental patients, selecting methods of treatment for dental disorders, and administering anesthetics prior to treatment to meet patients' needs.
Examines medical and/or dental patients in wards and dormitories. Reviews patient records for pertinent data. Consults with physicians and nurses on choice of medication as well as irregularities in order to recommend the transfer of patients to outside dental services for involved dental work.
Develops dental health and care procedures by reading technical literature on drugs, attending educational lectures, classes, and seminars to keep abreast of advances in the field, learn new techniques, and exchanges information.
Writes required reports of work performed in dental office, wards in order to recommend the repair or replacement of equipment to the Medical Director.
Performs various other related duties such as orderingdental supplies.

Knowledge of the types and symptoms of infections of the mouth, teeth, and gums.
Knowledge of the types and uses of dental equipment, instruments, and devices.
Knowledge of sanitation and sterilization methods, techniques, and procedures followed in a dental facility.
Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
Knowledge of chemicals, solutions and materials used in providing dental care.
Knowledge of the techniques and methods used in making impressions and finishing prostheses and bridge work.
Knowledge of the theory, principles, methods and techniques used in preparing sterile and dental tools, materials, and equipment.
Knowledge of the types and characteristics of drugs used in providing dental care.
Skill in using dental equipment, instruments, and devices.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to deal tactfully with others.
Ability to prepare technical reports.
Ability to establish rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds.

Knowledge of state and agency procedures governing the purchasing and requisitioning of supplies and equipment.
Knowledge of the standard methods and techniques for the storage of hazardous products.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of inventory control of supplies and equipment.
Knowledge of the types and application of emergency medical procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and tourniquets.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
LICENSE AND/ORCERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Current and validregistration as a dentist under the Massachusetts Board of Registration inDentistry.
