Overview

Our Dentist provides the dental services to inmate patients. Abides by the security regulations of the DOC and the regulations of the institution to which assigned. Provides required documentation of services to the Dental Director or designee in order to monitor compensation for service compliance with DOC contract. If there are changes within scheduled coverage, notifies the Regional Dental Director and H.S.A. Maintains CME requirements for continued dental practice in the State.

Qualifications

Education for Dentist:

  • Graduated from an accredited school of dental medicine

Experience for Dentist:

  • One (1) or more years experience in general dentistry preferred

Licenses/Certifications for Dentist:

  • Current licensure as a Dentist within the State

  • Current CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Reports to assigned facility at designated hour to examine, supervise and provide dental care/treatment to referred patients

  • Utilizes standard precautions when providing dental care and treatment

  • Evaluates patient dental care required or administered, dental operatory conditions, and equipment in use

  • Evaluates those patients needing or applying for dental care not included under basic health care services and makes whatever recommendations deemed clinically appropriate

  • Functions as a consultant to the prison staff health care provider, if needed

Learn more about this agency Responsibilities The incumbent is assigned as a staff dentist or dental specialist to the Dental Service and reports to the Chief, Dental Service and to Assistant Chief, Dental Service. The incumbent will function as an equal member within the larger team of staff dentists and auxiliary staff. Individuals with specialized training in a particular specialty may be assigned section chief responsibilities for that subspecialty and may function as the primary clinician or subject matter expert responsible for formulating policy, procedures, education and training affecting the daily clinical operations of the subspecialty. Preferred Experience: Dentists appointed to the Medical Staff of Memphis VAMC and assigned to the Dental Service are independent licensed practitioners who hold a full and unrestricted license in any state. Dentists will be graduates of an ADA accredited dental school and where applicable, will be graduates of an accredited residency in the applicable dental specialty residency. The provider will perform only those privileges for which approval has been granted by the Medical Center Director prospectively and in writing. Privileges will be renewed semiannually or when additional/new training qualifies the dentist to perform other procedures not already approved. A dentist provides direct patient care in a hospital setting to adults with or without acute and chronic medical conditions and serves as a consultant to other healthcare providers. The dentist is experienced in interpretation of dental radiographs and on delivery of diagnostic consultations and clinical dental treatment as outlined in their individual approved privileges. Dental staff who supervise residents will provide education, training, mentoring and supervision to students and residents He/she maintains own professional qualifications, participates in customer service training, computer training, attends mandated medical center training activities as required and provides resident supervision as directed.
