SUMMARY: Responsible for providing a full range of dental hygiene services to pediatric and adult patients, including cleanings, exams, scaling, polishing, fluoride treatments, sealants, oral hygiene instruction and oral health education. Responsible for adequately and accurately documenting all services provided in the patient's dental record.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Ensure the delivery of caring, quality and culturally competent dental hygiene services to children and adults. Improve patient well-being through high quality dental hygiene treatment, and oral health prevention and education.

  • Meet or exceed all standards of care, including overall clinical, quality, and productivity goals.

  • Ensure accuracy, efficiency, and appropriate confidentiality with patient charting and related recordkeeping and administrative functions as assigned.

  • Ensure all actions, job performance, personal conduct and communications represent the organization in a highly professional manner at all times. Uphold and ensure compliance and attention to all organizational policies and procedures as well as the overall mission and values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct care to scheduled patients and/or walk-in patients, when necessary

  • Perform all necessary oral prophylactic services, including oral screenings, x-rays, scaling, polishing, fluoride treatments, pit and fissure sealant, sub-gingival root planning, and curettage

  • Review patient medical history and medications, and consult dentist or physician as necessary

  • Educate patients on the proper methods of oral hygiene and plaque control

  • Maintain a sterile field and operate an autoclave

  • Maintain a patient recall system

  • Responsible for accurate entries in a patient's dental records

  • Responsible for taking x-rays when appropriate

  • Participate in Lowell CHC community outreach/education efforts, as appropriate and as assigned. This may include serving as an oral health consultant in our school-based programs, participating in oral health screenings, health education programs, etc.

  • Recognize nutritional and behavioral health needs of the patients and make appropriate referrals

  • Consult and collaborate with other health center staff as appropriate; participate in appropriate departmental and center-wide meetings

  • Participate in quality improvement activities as required by the health center or outside agency

  • Participate in on-site and off-site continuing education programs and in-service training, to maintain license and to meet the needs of patients

  • Fabricates night mouth guards, athletic mouth guards, and custom fluoride trays

  • Other duties as needed or required

Requirements:

Current and valid license to practice dental hygiene in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required. Current and valid license to administer local anesthesia required. Minimum of 1 year post graduate experience as a dental hygienist, preferably in a community or public health setting. Experience with special needs and medically-complex patients preferred. Spanish, Portuguese, Khmer, Swahili language skills a plus. History of good attendance and positive work attitude is essential. Hours may include occasional evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities include budget development and monitoring cost control; interviewing, hiring, and supervising dental hygiene faculty; oversight of clinical contracts and placements; and preparing reports as needed/required. The position requires a creative and knowledgeable individual with a positive approach to provide management for the Dental Hygiene program, and support the college's strategic initiatives. The Director is expected to exhibit initiative, enthusiasm, and teamwork in accomplishing the responsibilities of the position. The individual who serves in this position must be committed to diversity, excellence, student engagement and success. This is a 10 month (mid-August to mid-June), 80% full-time equivalency (FTE) non-unit professional position. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Dean of Nursing & Allied Health ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Provide academic leadership and administrative direction to the Dental Hygiene Department: * Serve as the Dental Hygiene Administrator/Administrator of Record in accordance with accreditation requirements. * Oversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of educational program, including curriculum development. * Coordinate searches for full-time faculty and staff positions. * Orient, mentor and evaluate full and part time faculty in their areas of responsibility according to the MCCC contract. * Recruit, interview and hire part-time faculty. * Prepare schedules and payroll for adjunct faculty for submission to the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health. * Plan and manage the budget to ensure the acquisition of necessary equipment and supplies for classrooms, laboratories, the dental hygiene clinic, and other instructional settings. Determine priorities for budgetary expenditures based on department needs; monitor budget. * Develop schedules for all classes offered in the Dental Hygiene area. * Prepare reports as needed for regulatory agencies, the College, and to support Dental Hygiene program initiatives and to assess the effectiveness of initiatives. * Ensure compliance with all required state regulations and accreditation criteria. * Collaborates within the department, college, and profession to provide ongoing clinical evaluation calibration for faculty * Promote and maintain responsive community relations, including a Dental Programs Advisory Board that meets at least 2 times per year. * Resolve student issues as they relate to the Dental Hygiene Department. * Develop and renew articulation agreements with area high schools and four-year institutions as appropriate. * Encourage and structure innovative professional development activities. * Provide leadership and direction to faculty in development of initiatives and activities that promote positive program outcomes. * Provide guidance and leadership to faculty on the use of alternative pedagogy to enhance student learning.This includes the promotion of instructional applications of technology, web-based enhancements, and e-learning. * Develop and implement grants and support faculty in developing and implementing grants. * Work in collaboration with relevant areas of the college to ensure that all students in the Dental Hygiene program receive appropriate academic advising. * Participate in relevant committees of the College. * Collaborate with the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health to: * Develop, implement, and assess Dental Hygiene Department goals. Ensure that goals align with the institution's mission and values and support the college's strategic directions including student success initiatives. * Provide leadership in grant activities for the Dental Hygiene Department.Assist with data collection, analysis and reporting. * Assess programmatic needs through the program review process and oversee the assessment of institutional, departmental and course student learning outcomes. * Develop and improve departmental curriculum which includes the development, revision, implementation and/or removal of courses. * Maintain current knowledge of trends and practices in the field through peer association, attendance at seminars, study, and review of literature. * Other duties as needed or assigned.
