Responsibilities

  • Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials.

  • Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment.

  • Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers.

  • Construction of dental prosthetic appliances.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Licensure: Applicants for all grade levels and specializations must be currently licensed to practice as dental hygienist in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia. You must submit a copy of your license as part of your application.

Dental Hygienist (Clinical) Applicants: Must be certified as a dental radiographer. Public Law 97-35 requires persons who administer radiologic procedures to meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. You must submit a copy of your certification or written document from a licensed practitioner as part of your application.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

GS-07 (Clinical): One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service. Specialized experience involves performing oral prophylactic care, oral health educational services to patients and experience in taking and interpreting X-rays.

GS-08 (Clinical): One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service. Specialized experience involves performing advanced oral prophylactic care, therapeutic, and preventive procedures in cases of periodontal diseases or inflammation or on patients with other medical or dental problems, placing temporary fillings, finishing amalgam restorations and experience in taking and interpreting X-rays.

GS-07 (Community Health): One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service. Specialized experience involves assisting in preparing and conducting educational lectures and providing demonstrations on dental hygiene and guidance to dental personnel on public health matters.

GS-09 (Community Health): One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service. Specialized experience involves preparing and conducting educational lectures and demonstrations on dental hygiene, planning public health programs, providing advice and policy guidance to dental personnel on public health matters, and recommending improved methods of dental hygiene.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1.Knowledge of dental hygiene science such as oral anatomy, oral physiology and histology, the principles and techniques of preventive dentistry, and dental instruments and materials.
2.Knowledge of oral pathology and periodontology sufficient to recognize a variety of abnormal conditions such as acute gingivitis, periodontitis, and deep periodontal pockets.
3.Knowledge of medical diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease as they relate to the care and treatment of the teeth.
4.Skill and dexterity in manipulating a variety of instruments while performing specialized dental hygiene procedures.
5.Ability to expose develops, and process radiographs including bite wing, periapical, and panoramic X-rays.
6.Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY: You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
