The Dental Assistant's schedule is subject to change (daily/weekly hours may increase or decrease) according to the needs of the practice. Evening and weekend hours may be required. This position is paid on an hourly basis. Position Summary The Dental Assistant performs a variety of back office support duties while promoting a safe and clean environment for providing quality dental care all the while exhibiting outstanding customer service to every patient and family. These duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the back-office team; preparing operatories, operating sterilization equipment, packing and sterilizing instruments; restocking supplies, and disinfecting and maintaining general back office areas. Additionally, the dental assistant will take x-rays and intraoral photos. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and walk; talk, hear, and smell; and use hands, fingers, and wrists (manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination) to handle or feel the mouth/teeth and gums of patients, as well as objects, tools, or controls associated with the dental field. The employee is frequently/occasionally required to reach; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; and balance, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, twist, pull, and crouch. The essential functions of this position require specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The essential functions of this position will result in the following: hazardous exposure (chemical and infections)-constantly; non-ionizing radiation (welding flash, microwaves, sun, etc.)-frequently; radiation (x-ray, radioactive, isotopes, etc.)-constantly; noise (loud/repetitive, 85 decibels per OSHA standard)-constantly; and personal protective equipment (PPE: respiratory masks, latex gloves, face shields, etc.)-constantly. Risk Factor The dental office environment may result in employees being exposed to toxic chemicals, radiation, infectious bodily fluids and materials, and increased noise level. This position assumes high risk. Position Qualifications * Current Radiographic Certification required * CPR and First-Aid certification required * Bilingual: English & Spanish preferred (if the geographic location of the office does not require the applicant to be bilingual, applicants who only speak English will be considered) * Experience in the dental industry preferred * Means to travel from one office to another, required as necessary Responsibilities * Embrace the Company's vision statement and 10 Core Values; focusing primarily on our patients, patient experience, teamwork, and creating a positive work culture for our team and dentist. * Be professional and courteous to the patients always, have a positive attitude and bemotivated to work. * Be punctual arriving to the dental office and mindful of breaks, lunches and clocking out on time. * Take X-rays and intraoral photos as prescribed by the dentist * Wear protective equipment (face shield, mask, gloves, disposable gown and utility gloves) * Disinfect operatories, apply barriers in operatories where needed transfer contaminated instruments to sterilization area process instruments for sterilize. * Prepare tray set-ups for the next patient, these incudes any scheduled treatments or cleaning * Promote internal referral programs as directed by the Team Lead * Seat patients in an operatory or back in the waiting room upon completion of X-rays (check the operatory to make sure it is clean and disinfected before seating a patient) * Keep dentists up to date on awaiting patients * Escort patients to front office area for patient dismissal when treatment is completed, and inform the receptionist when and for what their next visit must be scheduled. * Print out X-rays upon request * Organize the back office by keeping operatories stocked, disinfected and well maintained * Attend and participate in office team meetings and huddles * Participate on committees and special projects as requested * Comply with all Safety guidelines, OSHA, HIPAA, Infection Control protocol, and Standards * Perform duties as assigned by the Office Manager, Back Floor Supervisor, or Dentist Interpersonal and Organizational Skill Requirements * Strong communication skills * Ability to relate, communicate with, and work with people from different ages, backgrounds andcultures * Ability to get along with people peacefully and respectfully * Maintain an outgoing, friendly attitude with patients and coworkers, even underpressure * Ability to work with interruptions and to manage multiple priorities * Ability to write clearly, concisely, logically, and legibly * Ability to satisfactorily perform essential functions of the position Independent Action Under general supervision of the Office Manager and Managing Dentist, regular duties performed by the Dental Assistant require independent judgment. The Dental Assistant must consult with her/his supervisor regarding patient problems or confrontation, policy issues, expenditures, and unusual problems. Dental Assistants are not to perform RDA or expanded functions, which are not permissible by the Dental Practice Act, even if asked to do so by the dentist. If a Dental Assistant is asked by the dentist to perform functions for which she/he is not permitted by the Dental Practice Act, she/he must inform the Office Manager, Back Floor supervisor, or that Managing Dentist, as soon as possible. Dental Assistants are not to diagnose patients. This is the dentist's responsibility. Employees found doing so will be subject to disciplinary action up to, and including, termination.
