Under the general and direct supervision of the dentist, assists during the examination and treatment of patients.

Major responsibilities:

  • Prepare patient and operatory for dental treatment.

  • Review and enter patient medical history into electronic dental records.

  • Take blood pressure and pulse as required.

  • Remain with the assigned provider for the duration of the procedures.

  • Remain with the patient in the operatory.

  • Maintain dental instruments, materials, and medications in the quantities needed for general and specialized scheduled treatment.

  • Maintain organization of instruments/supplies/treatment rooms.

  • Follow infection control protocols and procedures.

  • Take radiographs (must be State Certified; see below).

  • Keep the oral operating field clean during dental procedures.

  • Prepare restorative materials and dental cement.

  • Prepare impression materials and take and pour up dental impressions as required.

  • Prepare and sterilize instruments following procedures.

  • Operate equipment safely, including autoclave, ultrasonic cleaner, vibrator, stone trimmer, etc.

  • Prepare work to be sent to dental laboratories.

  • Perform routine maintenance described as follows: cleaning sterilizers, lubricating equipment, replacing expendable parts, cleaning

  • operatories and any other routine maintenance duties as assigned.

  • Help patients understand appointments, payments, etc., when required.

  • Assist the provider with entering billing codes before dismissing a patient.

  • Assist the provider with the end-of-day tasks, including printing and checking the day sheet.

  • Scan documents into the computer as required.

  • Set up and assist with post/core build-up procedures.

  • Assist with hygiene double schedule

  • Set up and assist with traditional crown procedures (prep and delivery)

  • Independently fabricate temporary crowns and place them using temporary cement.

  • Independently take preliminary alginate impressions for dentures, repairs, whitening, occlusal guards, study models, etc.

  • Expose PANX radiographs.

  • Set up and assist with endodontic procedures.

  • Expose endodontic PAs as needed.

  • Set up and assist with advanced oral surgery procedures such as impacted wisdom teeth and surgical extractions.

  • Work as part of a team and help other assistants and dentists as needed.

  • Work in other sites, including Fitchburg, Leominster, Gardner, and ACTION as needed

  • Communicate effectively with other staff and patients in a respectful manner.

  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment to the health center's mission.

  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment to the established CHC Values and Standards.

  • Demonstrate understanding and follow guidelines outlined in the CHC Employee Handbook.

  • Demonstrate understanding and follow guidelines outlined in the Dental Department Policies and Procedures.

  • Provide other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma required.

  • At least two years of experience in a dental office is preferred.

  • MA Dental Assisting License

  • Radiology Certificate

  • DANB CDA or equivalent experience preferred

  • CPR Certified

  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking in English.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding office environment
