Job Duties

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services' (DBHDS) is seeking a highly motivated, skilled and experienced individual to serve as a Dental Assistant for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) in a community based Mobile Dental Program. This position works with an interdisciplinary team and licensed clinical staff to assist with clinical treatment within the scope of practice, as well as serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team providing services in a variety of community settings throughout the Commonwealth, with a primary focus in Southwest Virginia.

This position is responsible clear production of radiographs, including review of films and determination if radiographs need to be repeated, performing sterilization of equipment, stocking and inventory of equipment, scheduling appointments, and performing standardized or specialized procedures within the scope of practice of a dental assistant, while seeking guidance regarding more complex or non-routine issues of dental care, treatment, and practice and/or program plans and management. This is a field position and requires highway driving and routine overnight travel. This position will be responsible for responding to questions, concerns, complaints; completing appropriate documentation in clinical records; and maintaining documentation for tracking and data collection. Training is provided as needed and this position is responsible for providing advocacy in the areas of oral health and preventive healthcare; teaching responsibilities in the provision of oral health education, such as providing training programs and general presentations regarding the dental program; and providing consultation services, as needed, per the direction of the Dental Team Manager and the Director for the Office of Integrated Health Support Network.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience providing chair side assistance to Dentist, Anesthetist, and/or Dental Hygienist. Experience providing tray set-ups and following OSHA guidelines for disinfecting operatories in a timely fashion.

Experience performing administrative duties including, but not limited to, all clerical and data entry needs of a dental program. Ability to keep sufficient inventory for optimum dental treatment of every individual. Experience scheduling appointments.

Experience sending appointment reminders, making any necessary updates, and performing recordkeeping. Ability to maintain, purge, and file client records. Ability to work within scope of practice and the allowable activities of a Dental Assistant without on-site supervision.

Additional Considerations

Knowledge of Developmental Disabilities and leadership principles and practices. Experience utilizing dental practice software.

CPR/BLS certification and X-Ray certification. ACLS Certification or the willingness to obtain certification to perform rescue interventions as part of a treatment team, if needed. Dental Assistant certification or a willingness to obtain. A valid, unrestricted driver's license to drive mobile dental units, as needed.
