Job Summary

Dental Assistant Instructors use their training and practical experience in 4-handed dentistry to teach Ross Dental Assistant students what they need to succeed.

What are the main activities of this job? Primary Instructors teach in the Dental Assisting classroom with 10-20 students, covering clinical and administrative skills. Class sessions are 4.5 hours in either day or evening sessions. You learn the material and deliver lectures and demonstrations, working from the Ross lesson plans and curriculum. This is a part-time position, typically 9-18 hours per week.

Transferable skills: Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist, Dentist, 4-handed dentistry, chairside, radiography, part-time, CDA, RDA, Registered Dental Assistant, Certified Dental Assistant, dental office

Work Environment: Clean and bright classrooms with desk and clinical areas, including dental chair and Radiography. Interact with other instructors and campus staff to assist students.

  • 3+ years experience in the field and a national certification as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA from AMT) or Certified Dental Assistant (CDA from DANB) and formal training in a dental assisting program like Ross. If you do not have the formal education, you can also qualify with 5+ years experience in the field and a national certification. *additional requirements or exceptions may be applicable based on the state, program, and accreditation requirements.

  • Knowledge of materials (subjects) that will be taught to students and ability to use and communicate Ross curriculum

  • Interest in teaching or prior experience

Responsibilities* Chairside assist with staff dentists and dental students as assigned, including: Seat and dismiss patients, enter health history in the medical record and review at each appointment, prepare dental materials, expose and process radiographs and digital radiographs, take vital signs, set up and tear down operatories, sterilize instruments, order and inventory supplies, pour up models, prepare cases to be sent to lab, track lab cases. Chairside assist in general operative dentistry, oral surgery, prosthetics - fixed and removable, and endodontics. Obtain treatment consents and other duties as assigned related to patient care. Perform routine preventive maintenance on hand-pieces, instruments, dental units, chairs and lights, report major equipment repair and maintenance needs. Prepare and maintain dental instruments, including assembly, and sterilization. Order, stock, and organize operatory supplies. Coordinate laboratory cases for faculty. Order specialty supplies as assigned. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications* Knowledge of OSHA standards and aseptic techniques. Current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification as well as certification in radiology. Reasonable knowledge of dental clinic practices and procedures. Self-motivated and ability to work independently in a busy environment. Excellent communication/interpersonal skills. Excellent attendance and the ability to multi-task. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member. Excellent organizational skill Desired Qualifications* Certification by the Dental Assistant National Board (CDA) and/or State of Michigan, Registered Dental Assistant (RDA). Some knowledge of the School of Dentistry and University policies, practices, and regulations. Considerable experience as a dental assistant.
