This is an adjunct faculty pool for teaching in the Allied Health Occupations department. The pool will remain open until June 2024 unless positions are no longer needed. Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be contacted and interviewed as positions become available.

Responsible for instructing assigned Dental Assistant courses.  Potential courses include:

 Dental and Medical Emergency Management, Infection Control, Dental Materials or Dental Assistant I and II - Lab. Provides direct supervision and assessment of progress of dental assisting students in a classroom or laboratory classroom setting, each with an online component. Participate in program faculty meetings. Maintain college standards regarding professionalism, record keeping and instruction within the Allied Health department faculty team of the Dental Assistant program.

Supervision Received

The dean is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president. The dean confers with the department director in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.

  • Prepare, distribute and utilize instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate. Gives short daily assessments to students.

  • Incorporate, as pedagogically appropriated, current technology in classroom, distance learning, and laboratory environments including brain considerate classroom training.

  • Provides feedback regarding curriculum goals and objectives.

  • Provides a positive role model for the students, especially in the areas of caring, advocacy, respect for self and others, collegiality, ethical behavior, ethical reasoning, and strong work ethic (including responsibility, dependability, and accountability) and provides constructive feedback to students.

  • Provides direct supervision and evaluation of students as they perform in lab or deliver patient care in classroom and laboratory activities.

  • Provides individual performance review and recommendations to students as needed.

  • Utilizes steps of dental assistant process to facilitate student achievements of objectives.

  • Assists with curriculum development.

  • Gives input on equipment and supplies.

  • Acts as liaison between staff and students.

  • Formally discusses and documents evaluations with students one to two times per quarter per program policy.

  • Notifies students who may be having problems in academic performance of their deficits or problems in a timely and confidential manner and works with students, along with program coordinator, to identify ways to improve their performance.

  • Brings major problems of students' clinical performance to the attention of DA Program Coordinator for advice, guidance and counsel.

  • Attends and participates in required department faculty meetings.

  • Takes necessary steps to ensure that students are aware of changes in facility policies and procedures.

  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the philosophy and objectives, curriculum, policies and standards of the program on a periodic basis.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Licensed dental hygienist (RDH) and current dental hygiene license (Oregon Board of Dentistry) or dental assistant with current CDA (Dental Assisting Nation Board certification). Current CPR/First Aid card, HIPPA and OSHA standards training.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Experience: The experience section:

At least two years of recent industry experience. Teaching experience preferred.

Knowledge of: Computer applications for online learning through Blackboard, grading, communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, spreadsheets and database management, multi-media presentations; curriculum development; the community colleges mission, role in higher education, and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body and its needs; of the role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act; of a variety of pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, discussion and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles.

Knowledge of dental office safety practices including: knowledge of safe chemical handling, storage, and disposal procedures; safe handling and disposal of sharps equipment; how to locate and use MSDS sheets; proper medical safety and infectious disease handling and disposal; OSHA and HIPAA training.

Ability to: Safely demonstrate, model, and instruct students using proper procedures and protocol. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with respect to diverse students, staff, agencies and community members; ability and willingness to work with non-traditional adult learners as well as teens; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties, including the use of new technologies such as online instruction; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth.

Pass a criminal background check.

Licenses: Unencumbered DDS or DMD. If required to drive on behalf of the college, must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 60%), which is spent in a lab/clinical setting, utilizing equipment; and sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and other standard office equipment. On feet 90% of time.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a laboratory/ hospital environment, and is potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab/hospital environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises. Lighting is adequate.

This is an adjunct faculty position for teaching part-time in the Allied Health Occupations department. Compensation is based on the 23-24 Adjunct Faculty Salary Schedule.
