Job Summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is hiring for Dental Assistant III, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic

The Dental Assistant III is responsible for patient care management assistance in the OMFS Clinic. This position assists OMFS faculty in all aspects of dental care delivery, including advanced or specialized dentistry. The successful candidate will have documented customer service skills, the ability to effectively prioritize and manage time effectively, demonstrated follow-through and excellent work ethic.

Experience and Education

  • High School graduate or GED, completion of approved dental assistant program or on-the-job training, and three (3) year's experience as Dental Assistant.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC), Radiology, Jurisprudence, and Infection Control Certifications and be registered as a Dental Assistant with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners

Job Duties

  • Sets up sterile instrument trays for operations and routine dental treatments; ensures clinical trays are ready for emergencies.

  • Cleans and sterilizes treatment rooms and instruments after procedure completion.

  • Sterilizes and gives routine care to instruments, linens, and auxiliary supplies, including spray valves, compressed air apparatus, syringes, and suction equipment.

  • Assists in changing intra-oral and extra-oral dressings.

  • Prepares and delivers soft splints for patients as deemed necessary by division faculty.

  • Takes preoperative and postoperative radiographs, including processing and developing.

  • Labels and files radiographs with patients' charts.

  • Duplicates radiographs within 24 hours when requested.

  • Assists division faculty and circulates during oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic, prosthodontic or restorative procedures, handing instruments and supplies to dentist or surgeon as needed.

  • Provides maintenance and infection control of instruments and hand pieces by sharpening instruments as needed and by cleaning and sterilizing of instruments according to established policy.

  • Labels, sends, and follows-up on pathology samples obtained in clinic by division faculty.

  • Takes preoperative and postoperative clinical photographs of patients for documentation of changes for use in preparation of scientific articles.

  • Compiles information needed to set up new patient files and maintains patient files in current condition.

  • Compiles retrospective data from surgery patients' records for use by division faculty in preparing scientific papers and as aid in surgical procedure studies.

  • Schedules and coordinates daily patient appointments for division faculty to ensure maximum utilization of time and health service space and to avoid overloading of patient scheduling.

  • Triages and answers patient questions or emergency calls asked in EPIC Care in Dental Assistant's field of expertise, regarding prescription refills or information being sought by patient, both during and after office hours.

  • Schedules follow up appointments and other tests including MRIs, CAT scans and/or blood studies as deemed necessary by provider.

  • Assists in filing charts, dictations, etc.

  • Maintains organized and adequate inventory of supplies by ordering dental laboratory supplies and stocking work areas in organized manner.

  • Maintains patient education and instructional materials consultation area to ensure readily available patient information.

  • Educates and observes dental staff of lower grade.

  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions:

  • a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients;

  • b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants;

  • c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or

  • d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.

  • Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
