Department History Overview

Harris County Resources for Children and Adults was founded in 1966 as Harris County Child Welfare to provide support services for children taken under the wing of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Fifty years later, Harris County Resources for Children and Adults still provides this support. But the now-county department has expanded services for early prevention, intervention, and adult services.

Dental Assistant Overview:

Under the supervision of the Integrated Health Services Clinic Manager, and in collaboration with the UT School of Dentistry, this position provides a range of clinical, administrative, and staff support to a full-range dental services operation. Assists in the performance of dental and radiography procedures; prepares and maintains dental equipment and supplies in accordance with established protocol, procedures, policies, and standards. Assists in the coordination of day-to-day patient administration, records management, and other office support activities as assigned by the clinic manager.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides chair side assistance to dentist in the performance of dental procedures.

  • Prepares, sterilizes, organizes, and sets up dental equipment, ensuring that all dental instruments are cleaned, dated, and processed according to established clinic guidelines and standards.

  • Develops radiographs in accordance with provider orders.

  • Assists in the monitoring and maintenance of radiation safety procedures and policies.

  • Interacts with and processes dental clinic clients; schedules appointments, perform telephone triage, maintain Dental Charts, conducts client assessments/screenings, and obtains prior approval for dental treatments.

  • Monitors and maintains dental equipment, such as compressors, evacuator systems, radiographic developing equipment, sterilizers all dental equipment including light curing units, in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.

  • Follows and maintains all relevant federal, state, and institutional regulations, guidelines, policies and standards for the provision of dental clinic services.

  • Maintains pediatric dentistry treatment rendered form and creates and maintains dental records in accordance with established protocol and procedures.

  • Orders and maintains inventories of dental clinic supplies.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency

Experience:

  • Must have one (1) year of full-time paid work experience in a dental office working with children and adolescents in a pediatric setting.

  • Must have six months of knowledge with processing Medicaid forms.

  • Training and experience using a personal computer with a variety of software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.

Licensure:

  • Must have a Certification from an accredited program for Dental Assistants.

  • A successful applicant must complete Nitrous Oxide Sedation Certification (on-the-job certification) and EFDA Certification (on-the-job certification) within six months of employment.

  • Reliable transportation with a valid driver's license (Texas) and auto liability insurance.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of patient care and maintenance of patient charts.

  • Knowledge of radiology equipment.

  • Knowledge of dental care delivery processes.

  • Knowledge of dental terminology and procedures.

  • Ability to engage and relate to children.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full-time | Regular

  • Monday

  • Friday | 8 a.m.

  • 5 p.m. (Rotating some Saturdays)

Salary:

  • $34,944.00 - $40,289.60 (Annually)

  • Based on 26 Pay Periods

  • Plus, Mileage Reimbursement

Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
