Job Summary:

Under general supervision, provides a range of clinical, administrative and staff services in assisting the professional dental staff. Assists the dentist in providing dental and radiography procedures; prepares and maintains dental equipment and supplies in accordance with established protocol, procedures, policies, and standards and assists in the coordination of day-to-day patient administration, records management and office support services.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides chair side assistance to dentists in the performance of dental procedures to include preventive and prosthetic procedures.

  • Prepares, sterilizes, organizes, and sets up dental equipment, ensures that all dental instruments are cleaned, dated, and processed according to established clinic guidelines and OSHA standards; and maintains the overall cleanliness of the dental area.

  • Monitors, and maintains dental equipment such as radiographic developing equipment, and sterilizers in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.

  • Develops and processes dental radiographs in accordance with provider orders; assists in monitoring and maintenance of radiation safety procedures and protocols.

  • Orders and maintains inventories of dental clinic supplies.

  • Interacts with and processes dental clinic patients; schedules appointments, maintains dental charts, record dental findings using the POMR charting format.

  • Maintains dental laboratory slips and creates and maintains dental records in accordance with established protocol and procedures.

  • Maintains overall cleanliness of the dental area.

  • Respond to requests from Security Staff as well as Armor Staff in accordance with Armor and Facility Guidelines. This includes following the rules and regulations for employee conduct/behavior and chain of command set forth by the command staff at all times while working within the detention/correctional facility.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to maintain records.

  • Interview skills.

  • Current knowledge of and ability to follow a full range of dental clinical procedures and protocols.

  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.

  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.

  • Ability to set up and prepare dental equipment and instrumentation in accordance with established regulations and guidelines.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, correctional accrediting body standards and institutional regulations and guidelines for the provision of dental outpatient services.

  • Knowledge of correctional accrediting standards.

  • Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide range of dental equipment in accordance with prescribed procedures and standards.

  • Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols.

  • Ability to develop and process dental radiographs.

  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from accredited dental assistant program with a current license to practice in the state.

  • Registered or certified by a professional association.

  • One year of experience as a dental assistant.

  • Current CPR certification.

  • Other relevant professional experiences or educational backgrounds will be considered as deemed appropriate. However, when licensure is required by local, state, federal or contractual guidelines, we will not alter our position on those requirements.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work is performed in an interior clinical environment

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds.

  • Standing and/or walking for more than 4 hours per day.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: * Completes pre-employment and pre-participation employee health screenings. Evaluates laboratory results and provides appropriate notification to Associates, non-Associates and stakeholders. Check vital sign, administer immunizations, blood tests, and urine drug screens. * Maintains the medical surveillance program and associated medical records. Orders laboratory tests, x-ray studies and other diagnostic services, as necessary, in order to determine job performance capabilities and to rule out communicable diseases. Assess workers comp patients and refers claims to Leave Management for administration. * Provide first care treatment for minor Illnesses and injuries of Nemours Associates. Initiates and tests for exposures to blood borne pathogens, body fluid and Infectious disease exposure protocols and provides follow up care in accordance with Nemours policies. * Prepares and maintains all related health service records in accordance with policies and procedures. * Provides first aid treatment for Job-related and non-job-related Workplace Injuries. May monitor and evaluate the patient as needed. * Evaluates employees desiring to return to work who do not fall under FMLA guidelines (following written consent to return to work from their personal physicians) in order to determine any medical limitations. Coordinates employee return to work requirements with Leave Management. * Advise Associates with issues such as substance abuse, psychosocial needs, wellness/health promotion concerns and other health or work-related concerns. Utilizes the Employee Assistance Program to assist Associates with dependencies and/or other behavioral issues and stress. * Ensures appropriate medical inventory levels by ordering and stocking supplies, medications and vaccines as necessary. * Contribute, maintains and delivers wellness programs that provide education and continuing health improvement. Performs ergonomic assessments and screens for current conditions. * Delivers nursing services, including but not limited to mass flu vaccinations, TB skin testing, T-dap injections and Respiratory program testing as needed for Nemours Associates. * Additional duties and responsibilities may include filing/scanning medical charts, entering documentation and data into ReadySet EMR System, preparing monthly summary reports, monitoring compliance and compiling data to support monthly reports. May also be asked to participate in committee and leadership meetings as requested or needed.
