BASIC PURPOSE

The delivery driver position drives a tractor trailer or smaller when needed, provides excellent customer service and uses a hand truck or two-wheeler on metal truck ramps to manually unload various products (meats, produce, frozen foods, groceries, dry goods, equipment and supplies) at customer drop-off sites. Returns the empty trailer to the distribution center.

Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A issued by the state of legal residence with the necessary endorsements and be DOT qualified. Ability to operate manual transmission preferred. All functions must be completed in a safe and timely manner and in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

May also be called upon to perform duties of Backhaul or Shuttle Driver.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform all pre-trip responsibilities including but not limited to: obtaining and

reviewing driver itinerary, checking route numbers and account numbers for assigned

deliveries, counting items and checking customer invoices of products that have been

loaded, moving tractors to the loading dock to attach the preloaded trailers,

completing required trailer temperature checks and performing pre-trip safety check

inspections of trucks and trailers according to Department of Transportation (DOT)

regulations.

Drive to and deliver customer orders to meet the scheduled customer times and

maintain adequate productivity rate to meet delivery schedules. Use electronic time

keeping system to log in time at customer site.

Apply knowledge of commercial driving and skills in maneuvering vehicle at varying

speeds in difficult situations, such as heavy traffic, inclement weather or in tight

loading dock areas.

Visually survey customer's site during the approach to determine hazards.

Unload products from the trailer with a hand truck or by hand and place items in

designated customer storage areas.

Verify delivery and pick up of correct items with customer and obtain proper signatures. Collect

money (cash or checks) where required. Contact distribution center management for

authorization of invoice discrepancies and communicate all errors and returns.

As requested by management, drive backhauls which requires picking up product from

vendors and bring back to warehouse for receiving while staying within DOT Hours of

Service (HOS) regulations.

As requested by management, drive shuttles which requires moving loaded trailers

containing various food products, equipment and supplies and empty trailers to and

from remote dispatch sites while staying within DOT Hours of Service (HOS)

regulations.

Return tractor and trailer to distribution center when route is completed.

Perform all post-trip responsibilities including but not limited to: unloading damaged

goods, customer returns and completing necessary paperwork; performing safety

checks on the truck and trailer, unhooking and securing the trailer; fueling (as

required by the distribution center); parking and securing the tractor and hand truck;

completing DOT logs (electronic or manual as required) and company vehicle

maintenance reports (DVIR) and reconcile these with the appropriate company

representative as required.

Attend all required company meetings and adhere to all safety practices and company

policies.

Follow distribution center shift times and continue until the work is completed within

DOT HOS regulations. Some Holiday, Saturday, Sunday, and overnight deliveries may

be required.

Must satisfactorily complete all company mandated trainings and assessments including

US Foods Driver Onboarding program.

RELATIONSHIPS

Internal: Transportation Supervisors, Transportation Manager, and Transportation

Administration and Fleet Maintenance personnel. The incumbent is required to interact with employees at all levels of responsibility throughout the company in a professional manner.

External: The incumbent is required to interact with customers in a professional manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training:

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.

  • Must have a Class A CDL license

  • Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English as it relates to the job and to the safety regulations. Must have basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to work with money collected from customers to ensure the amount collected matches the invoiced amount.

Related Experience/Requirements:

  • Minimum six months commercial driving experience or three months foodservice or food and beverage delivery experience required. Experience delivering food products preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be able to use or learn to use, all equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) i.e. XATA, POD, and tools used to perform the job.

    Must be able to perform all job functions safely. Must be able to work the scheduled/assigned times and required overtime for the position. Must know/have ability to learn safety data sheet information regarding all material used within the scope of the work.

    Must be able to perform coupling procedures for the Tractor/Trailer. Must have excellent customer service skills. Must successfully complete the DOT written examination for drivers and pass a controlled substance abuse screening test.

    Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, including applying tire chains if needed. Must adhere to all safety practices and company policies. Ability to operate manual transmission preferred.

  • No more than two convictions in the past two-year period for traffic violations. No more than one of these may be a serious as defined by DOT (e.g., leaving scene of an accident, reckless driving, homicide/assault, eluding police, at fault offense, refusing a breathalyzer test, committing a felony with a vehicle) violation or result of an accident - company or private vehicle; No DUI convictions within past three years, regardless of type of vehicle operated; no driver's license suspension within past three years (insurance and overweight tickets are excluded); and no termination by previous employer for failure to comply with safety regulations or for accident involvement.

Work Environment:

  • May spend significant amounts of time out-of-doors, exposed to potentially difficult environmental conditions.

    May be subject to irregular work schedules, temperature and weather extremes, long trips, short notice for assignment of a trip, tight delivery schedules, delays en-route and other stresses and fatigue related to driving a large commercial motor vehicle on crowded streets and highways in all kinds of weather. Must spend most of the working time in the truck, exposed to noise and vibration levels which may be higher than those typically experienced in passenger cars.

  • Must be able to pass DOT physical. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions.

    Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for an extended period. Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle's cab multiple times a day. Cab floor level is generally at least 36 inches to 66 inches above ground level, with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and handholds; also requires occasional bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching and balancing. Must be able to perform the following physical activities for described length of time:

American Red Cross Health and Safety instructors are an elite group of professionals who teach valuable lifesaving skills to 12 million people each year in businesses, schools and communities. We are currently seeking a Training Services Instructor to work in Birmingham, AL. This is a part-time position that will be scheduled up to 19 hours per week, with fixed availability for scheduling on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday each week. Instructors must be available for 12 hour shifts as needed; business needs can range for coverage anywhere from 6am-10pm. Classes are from 2-6 hours long, and daily hours worked are usually 8 hours or less. Additional availability is welcome and may result in additional teaching assignments, but may not replace fixed availability (previously listed) in any given week. Instructors in this position will be required to travel routinely to locations throughout a 75-mile radius of Birmingham. Responsibilities * Instruction: Teaches Red Cross Health and Safety courses within their current certifications to businesses and to the community. Confirms course at least 3-5 business days before the scheduled course. Must arrive to teaching site a minimum 30 minutes before class is to begin. * Supply Chain/Logistics: Responsible for maintaining, managing and storing all assigned equipment, including storage at assigned work location and transporting equipment in personal vehicle. Responsible for re-ordering all necessary equipment at least once per month and maintaining and managing an active inventory of supplies at all times. Instructors are responsible for transporting, loading/unloading, carrying and/or lifting equipment as necessary at assigned teaching locations. At conclusion of class, is responsible for the cleaning equipment according to established decontamination guidelines and reporting any maintenance issues to the appropriate logistics staff member. * Quality Assurance: Responsible for applying quality assurance and control programs. Integrates quality improvement activities and measures in overall service provision. Ensures that the proper safety measures are in place to protect customers and staff who participate in the training activities. * Resource Management: Responsible for efficient and effective use of resources. Adheres to the financial and registration policy regarding unregistered students in Community classes. * Availability: Commit to a fixed availability schedule within the scheduling software, Skedulo to meet teaching needs of the territory. * Communications/Reporting: Engages in regular communications with Training Specialist regarding course updates and latest changes to products/services. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).Current certification to be an instructor in discipline is desired.
