Rackham is committed to enhancing the development and training offerings related to diversity, equity, and inclusion for all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through its Professional Development DEI Certificate program. This program is designed to prepare participants to work in a diverse environment while fostering a climate of inclusivity. The program cultivates DEI leaders to meaningfully contribute to and lead DEI efforts on campus and in their future workplaces. The program has expanded significantly since its inception in 2017.

The DEI Certificate Program is seeking a collaborative, energetic, enthusiastic, hands-on, innovative and well-organized program specialist who embraces creative work in a fast-paced environment. The program specialist will significantly contribute to all aspects of the program's mission; including cultivating a diverse, equitable and inclusive community of scholars and advancing Rackham Graduate School's Strategic Vision. This position provides program coordination and student support for the DEI Certificate participants and would take responsibility for managing all associated administrative tasks. The program specialist reports to the Program Lead Senior who leads the DEI Certificate program.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a 3-year term-limited position with renewal contingent upon the success of the program, completion of performance expectations and available funding.

Responsibilities*

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the development, planning and implementation of all DEI Certificate student workshops and training

  • Manage the online dashboard to track program participant progress in collaboration with Rackham ITS team, including approving all submitted reflection forms

  • Assist with the collection and analysis of program data, maintain program records and monitor student progress

  • Work with the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) manager at Trotter Multicultural Center to compile and analyze program evaluation data

  • Serve as an advocate, resource and point of contact for program participants

  • Create and manage a menu of outreach activities and virtual learning opportunities for program participants

  • Serve as a liaison for the DEI certificate program and communicate and/or attend meetings with established partners across the university, i.e. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI), The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT), National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID), etc.

  • Develop and lead various virtual community building activities among DEI Certificate participants

  • Facilitate and lead workshops and meaningful learning experiences for the DEI Certificate curriculum

  • Lead small group meetings of students in their respective "tracks" (research, teaching, service and engagement, leadership and collaboration)

  • Work in collaboration with the program lead and university partners to develop an online platform to broaden the scope of the program's reach

  • Work in collaboration with the program lead and university partners (i.e., The Program on Intergroup Relations) to develop a graduate student Intercultural Dialogue Series

  • Assist with the implementation and launch of new programs and special projects

  • Draft regular announcements to certificate program participants in collaboration with Rackham Communications team and program lead

  • Collaborate with Rackham Communication team to develop ideas for using video, social media and marketing to connect with students and promote the program

  • Assist in the design of marketing and promotion materials in collaboration with Rackham Communications team and program lead

  • Provide feedback on the diversity statements submitted by program participants to fulfill the certificate capstone assignment

  • Hold office hours with DEI certificate participants

  • Address questions or inquiries emailed to the rack-dei-certificate@umich.edu mailbox

NOTE: SOME FLEXIBILITY OF SCHEDULED WORK HOURS IS REQUIRED, INCLUDING EVENINGS OR WEEKENDS ON A PRIOR SCHEDULED BASIS.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field

  • Demonstrated background knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Experience with issues in graduate education, student development, and DEI in higher education

  • An understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented and marginalized populations in higher education

  • Ability to effectively and efficiently develop and execute several key projects

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities

  • Ability to collaborate effectively on a team

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, prioritization, and follow-through

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work and communicate effectively and professionally with the University community as well as external community partners

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as the task requires

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in a related field

  • Two years' experience in a higher education environment with demonstrated progressively increased responsibility

  • Familiarity and experience with Rackham DEI student programming

  • Strong computer skills and experience utilizing technology to deliver programs and services virtually

  • Experience teaching, facilitating workshops and/or facilitating dialogue programs, both virtually and in person

  • Demonstrated skill in fostering new relationships and marshalling professional networks

  • Experience with fostering, planning and delivering virtual community engagement in various formats

  • Experience using Canvas Learning Management System

The Secondary Education program at the University of Michigan's School of Education is seeking a part-time program administrator to support our IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning program. This is a part-time, temporary position with the potential for extension. The selected candidate will be responsible for collaborating with the SOE Faculty IB Lead, Department Chair, and Managing Director, and other pertinent SOE faculty; and leveraging University resources, such as the Office of Academic Innovation to develop and implement 1. the instruction of 3 IB Modules to the teacher interns; 2. the research and data process related to our IB certificate; 3. liaison with the International Baccalaureate Organization, partner schools, students, faculty and staff to promote and explain our IB Certificate Programme, department chair or IB faculty lead,; and 4. advise undergraduate and graduate students in the certificate programme regarding their certificate programme progress, and professional development and career opportunities, including those in IB partner schools. , The IB Certificate Programme Coordinator will be supervised by and will work closely with the World Languages and IB Lead Faculty member, but will be expected to independently manage and run the majority of day-to-day IB programme activities. Responsibilities* 1. Work with lB Lead Faculty to develop and implement the IB on-line instructional modules * moderate the modules by answering questions from students (undergraduate and graduate) during the implementation periods (four times a year) * edit and revise online modules as needed (four times a year) 2. Research, analyze data, and provide professional learning for faculty and staff * gather and analyze feedback from on-line modules * gather data on SOE IB certification programme (e.g. create research questions, methods to answer them) * attend local IB meetings and conferences to both gather information on other IB teaching and learning programs and to present on Michigan's; attend national and international conferences as funding and opportunity allows * attend IB trainings as necessary to improve targeted aspects of our program * possibly supervise and support doctoral students' fellowships and assistantships as graduate student administrators, researchers, or instructors in the certificate programme who have an interest in IB education and research 3. Communication * work closely with IB lead faculty and secondary TE program leaders to administer the certificate programme * co-present to other faculty, staff, and stakeholders on program developments * meet with faculty who want to make their assignments align with the IB certification * update secondary TE program leaders, deans on program progress * meet with partner school leaders and prospective partner school leaders * participate in meetings with partner schools/districts' IB coordinators to ensure fieldwork done by students includes access to IB programme standards * assist with the coordination of IB fieldwork placements in coordination with secondary TE program managing director/clinical placement coordinator * visit IB clinical placement sites in collaboration with secondary TE program managing director/clinical placement coordinator and/or field instructors to gather information on student experiences * Gather feedback from IB internal and external partners, and notify them of program modification 4. Work with IB Lead Faculty to design and continue to update materials that describe and advertise the IB certificate programme 5. Certificate Programme Advising * consult and meet with students during semester about portfolio assignments/tasks * review all students' portfolios (three times a year) * Assess portfolio elements using rubric and meet with students who may need support in changing some of their portfolio elements * Review revised portfolio elements * meet with students to support them in planning IB lessons / units in their field placement or to help them interpret their experiences related to IB * present to all undergraduate and graduate students at the beginning of the first semester * ensure all students have access to the OCC and know how to access it * help find funding sources for students who aim to earn the IB certificate, but need financial support for the certificate fee * help students apply for outside funding sources for IB certification * collaborate with SOE career services to help students search for jobs in IBO authorized schools * visit fieldwork seminar classes or prosem classes as necessary when an upcoming assignment should include IB elements and help students plan to incorporate those elements * work with IB Lead Faculty to liaise with other university courses with a global focus, including those in the SOE global education-focused minor, to promote the IB teacher and learning certification programme Required Qualifications* The ideal candidate must be independent, organized, self-reliant, able to take initiative, and able to work well as part of a team of staff and faculty across organizations and complex systems In addition, they need to be an excellent communicator, orally and in writing. They must also have the following qualifications: * a master's degree or greater; * familiarity with secondary teacher education programs; * familiarity with the International Baccalaureate Organization and IBO Programmes; * knowledge of international education; * record of successful teaching experience in teacher training or teacher education, including teaching in on-line formats; preferably in North American and an international context, * project management or program leadership experience.
