Job Summary:

The Deck Manager is responsible for overseeing the aquatic area and providing work direction to staff while on duty. The incumbent provides feedback in specified focus, responds to incidents, and interacts with parents and participants. The incumbent provides a high level of customer service and ensures a safe and positive pool environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with swim lesson execution which may include providing work direction to staff, providing real time feedback and noting suggestions and comments for their supervisor's review.

  • Coordinates class participants and placement to ensure efficient class programing during the first session of lessons.

  • Serves as first level contact responding and documenting incidents which may occur.

  • Provides quality customer service to members, volunteers and participants by regularly interacting with parents and swimmers by getting to know names and families on a personal basis.

  • Contact all families that miss 2 swim lessons in a row during the session.

  • May act as a swim instructor as needed based on class dynamics, training opportunities, or emergency substitution.

  • May assist with implementation of in-service training sessions.

  • Delivers programs directly to members and participants a portion of the time.


This position reports to the Program Manager or Sr. Coordinator-Lifeguard and Safety. The incumbent interacts regularly with team members, parents, participants and members. Provides daily technical work direction for Swim Instructors during scheduled shifts.



  • Minimum age of 18

  • Minimum 6 months of experience as a swim lesson instructor.

  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification.

  • Certifications required within 45 days of hire: BLS, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration and complete Deck Manager Training (may not teach until certifications are complete).

  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, respond and remedy unsafe situations.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations and ages.

  • Ability to serve as a positive role model and provide constructive feedback.

  • Effective verbal communication skills

  • Dedicated to member safety and the mission and philosophy of the YMCA.


  • One (1) year experience in a YMCA setting.

  • Nationally accredited lifeguard certification.

Work Conditions:

  • Must remain in the pool area at all times.

  • Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.

  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.

  • Ability to recognize distress signals.

  • Be in water ranging from 80-90 degrees for one to four hours.

  • Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
