ROLE of the POSITION

Analysis and implementation of the current strategic vision and plan for UNLV's School of Medicine for its continued progress in accreditation, education, research and clinical care, including innovative interdisciplinary programs and alliances with partners across the UNLV system and within the community.

  • The Dean is responsible - in consultation with the School of Medicine faculty, the President, and the Provost - to develop and implement a compelling strategic vision for the School's future in order to establish and pursue clear priorities, manage resources effectively to steadily advance those priorities, develop relationships with other healthcare related schools within the University as well as the surrounding medical community, and lead a fundraising effort needed to implement the agreed upon initiatives.

  • UNLV's School of Medicine vision, mission and plan promotes the importance of interdisciplinary research, innovative clinical care, and teaching, and of collaborations within UNLV and with key external partners in practice, government, and beyond. While managing and leading locally, the Dean must also continue to foster and develop the School's relationships in communities locally and nationally. The new Dean will build on the School's foundation to create a cohesive and collaborative academic community among faculty, students, and staff.

  • The Dean will assure that the school delivers high quality patient care and leads in the development of community outreach, including helping to meet the healthcare needs of the underserved communities. He/she will be the school's public voice and will articulate and promote the school's contributions in local, state, regional, and national arenas of medicine, continuing medical education, health care, and health policy.

Building strong relationships with overseers, alumni, and other donors, and leading the School's fundraising efforts.

  • The Dean will foster strong relationships with existing and potential supporters and guide the development of the School's financial resources to propel the work of UNLV School of Medicine faculty and students to even higher levels. To do so, the new Dean must work effectively with relevant faculty, staff, and administrators, both within School of Medicine and in the UNLV's administration, to develop a sound strategy to build on the future successes in order to gain private philanthropic support and to identify potential investments that will empower UNLV School of Medicine to achieve its ambitious goals, and to secure the long-term vitality and prosperity of the School through prudent management of resources.

Recruitment and Retention of an Eminent Faculty

  • The Dean is first and foremost the leader of the School's faculty, responsible for ongoing recruitment and retention. In order to successfully recruit and retain the best, the Dean must not only create an environment that supports cutting edge scholarship and clinical work, but also be able to communicate UNLV School of Medicine's vision and mission in a way that compels the scholarly, clinical, and educational leaders to join the effort. Codified approaches to faculty development and ensuring care-provider wellness feature prominently in matters related to faculty recruitment and retention.

Collaboration with fellow Deans on interdisciplinary programs, joint faculty appointments, and new academic initiatives, and service as a visible exemplar of engaged and positive UNLV citizenship.

  • The new Dean must be committed to the UNLV's mission and vision and be willing and able to participate actively as a key member of the senior leadership team. He/she must be adept at collaborating with fellow Deans on interdisciplinary programs, joint faculty appointments, and new academic initiatives.

  • A demonstrated track record of achievement as an effective administrator, leader, and collaborator, providing strong evidence of a capacity to lead UNLV's School of Medicine and to collaborate effectively with the School's faculty, the President, the Provost, Deans, and other members of UNLV's senior leadership.

  • He/she will be an outstanding scholar possessing intellectual breadth who is able to articulate a vision for the School of Medicine and assert strong leadership to guide the School toward their future goals and objectives.

  • He/she will be able to encourage communication and collaboration across disciplines and foster a productive and enjoyable work environment for faculty and staff.
