DESCRIPTION:
The Dean of Students position serves as a vital bridge between students, faculty, and administration, dedicated to nurturing the holistic development of each student in the areas of student support, student life, and building safety and management. With a keen focus on social, emotional, and academic needs, they provide guidance and support, fostering a positive and inclusive school environment. Collaborating closely with building administration, they assist in managing the intricate day-to-day operations, ensuring a smooth and enriching educational experience for all. The work of the Dean is guided by the Core Values and Beliefs of Millbury Memorial Junior-Senior High School as they apply to the assigned (middle or high school) grade levels.

GENERAL DUTIES: Seeks ways to develop and sustain a climate of equity, inclusion, and mutual respect between and among the students and adults in the school;
Assists the principal and assistant principal(s) in the overall management and administration of the school, especially in the areas of day-to-day student life, support students' social/emotional development and skill building, and student discipline/attendance;
Assists in developing and administering practices dealing with campus supervision, control, and security;
Confers with parents, teachers, counselors, support service personnel, and students on matters of discipline, general well-being, and implementing procedures for protecting the health and welfare of students;
Performs such record-keeping functions as the principal(s) may direct;
Serve as a liaison between the school and families within the community;
Uses effective problem-solving strategies to meet student needs; and
May oversee matters of student attendance, campus supervision and control, counseling students, and making appropriate referrals to guidance or counseling.
Assume responsibility when all other administrators are out of the building.
Provide supervision at extra-curricular and athletic events on a rotating schedule with the principal and assistant principals. Assign and monitor daily office detentions and provide daily office detention attendance reports/updates to administration.
Assist the principal and assistant principal with the annual review and update of the school handbook.
Participate in professional development opportunities sponsored by the District that will enhance the ability to perform the position's duties. Participate in Restraint Training; become certified in its implementation and maintain the ability to implement restraint techniques; be familiar with regulations related to restraint use.
Report and refer all major handbook infractions to the assistant principal and assist with any resulting investigations, as requested.
Coordinates efforts with guidance, school resource officer, school adjustment counselors, and school psychologist to discuss and problem-solve student attendance and/or behavior issues through the MTSS and SST process. Consult with families, in collaboration with the assistant principal and guidance, concerning student attendance and behavior.
Be a visible and continuous presence in hallways and cafeteria throughout each day to ensure students are in class and handbook infractions are limited.
Serve as a resource to staff in dealing with classroom management issues. Investigate student bullying complaints and file appropriate reports to school administration and district office.
The omission of specific duties here does not exclude them from the position's responsibilities if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to walk and stand on tile flooring for up to seven hours per day and or multiple miles per day
Some work is performed in a typical office environment which may include everyday discomforts and distractions typical of office settings, such as proximity to colleagues, temperature variations, frequent interruptions, and moderate noise.
