Job Description:

DEAN OF STUDENTS

BARGAINING UNIT/NON-UNIT: Non Unit

ANTICIPATED START DATE: Summer 2024

SALARY RANGE: $105,000.00 - $115,000.00 annual salary, commensurate with education and experience.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The Dean of Students, reporting directly to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success, assumes a pivotal role in shaping the future of student life at our college. This position calls for an innovative leader who will not only provide vision and direction but also exercise oversight over all student affairs functions, ensuring a transformative experience for our students. We are seeking a dynamic individual who possesses a deep understanding of complex systems and is committed to delivering unparalleled service and educational opportunities to students beyond the traditional classroom setting.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Serve as an advocate for students, through fostering collaboration across campus to prioritize student voices and address their needs effectively.

  • Ensures the performance of members of the following departments by setting annual goals, conducting individual and team meetings, conducting evaluations, and problem-solving:

  • Fitness Center

  • Food Pantry

  • Peer Tutoring

  • Public Safety

  • Student Activities

  • Wellness Center

  • Women's Resource Center

  • Veterans Center

  • Schedule, assign, inspect, and review work of assigned staff to ensure work is performed according to established standards; conduct performance evaluations, formal and informal coaching, and disciplinary action.

  • Identify, develop and recommend professional development needs/opportunities, and coordinate/conduct training, and ensure that professional development opportunities are available for direct reports.

  • Ensure programs and services are compliant with state and federal laws and regulations including FERPA, HIPAA and VAWA, and College policies.

  • Attend and actively contribute to various meetings, including those of the President's Cabinet and Academic and Student Affairs Leadership, as needed.

  • Engage in statewide meetings for senior student affairs officers and conduct officers to stay informed and contribute to broader discussions.

  • Plan, implement, and administer strategic goals, objectives and initiatives, as well as develop policies and procedures to support student enrollment and student success.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student groups/organizations on current/proposed programs and services to support student enrollment and student success

  • Effectively manage fiscal resources including assigned budgets.

  • Provide leadership for the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), which includes;

  • Responding to student concern reports

  • Providing consultation and referral to college employees regarding student concerns

  • Providing leadership for the team and coordinating weekly meetings

  • Coordinating training and development activities for BIT team members, as well as outreach to faculty and staff as needed

  • Manage Maxient (student conduct system), and keep records current

  • Develop and manage content for web presence

  • Act as Deputy Title IX Officer, when needed

  • Provide student conduct support, including;

  • Act as campus administrator, to hear cases, determine sanctions, and to coordinate and train hearing board

  • Serve as Student Grievance Officer, to work with students to address any alleged abridgement of rights

  • Complete student reports as they relate to 'student conduct standing' as requested by transfer institutions receiving GCC students

  • Collaborate with the grants officer in ongoing grant planning and development efforts.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE*:

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Public Administration, Psychology or related field

  • A minimum of five (5) years of related student success experience in higher education at an administration and supervisory level

  • Successful record of strategic planning in a student success environment

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience as a student conduct hearing officer

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and in developing inclusive communities and work teams

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND APTITUDES:

  • Ability to communicate and present information effectively to a wide range of audiences, including; students, faculty, staff, and college community members.

  • Ability to exhibit composed leadership and remain adaptable during high-pressure situations

  • Ability to represent the College with executive-level professionalism and respect

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with conduct software platforms to initiate, track, and record student conduct matters

  • Familiarity with national student success trends

  • Professional experience within a community college setting

Supervisory responsibility: Provides direct supervision to AFSCME Unit; Non-Unit professionals; and MCCC unit professionals.

Working conditions/physical demands: This position is located in a normal office environment, not subject to extreme variations of temperatures, odors etc. Low to moderate noise. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. Operates equipment i.e. Computer, calculator, copier/fax machines etc. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office. Will also move about throughout the campus as needed. The person frequently communicates with colleagues, staff and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations. Occasional travel to and from meetings etc.
