Position Summary

Position open until filled.

This position is 25 hours a week. Salary range for this position is: $23.98/hr. - $32.23/hr. (depending on experience)

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. The employer will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Accessibility Resource Center (ARC), the Deaf Interpreter will be responsible for providing interpreting services and support to the ARC.

The Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) promotes equal access to students with documented disabilities by acting in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE.

Please note that Seattle Colleges is working under hybrid remote and on-site operations, pending public health guidance and business needs. Per CDC and WA Public Health directions, at this time we will be practicing social distancing and holding interviews virtually using video conference or teleconference options. As such, if you are selected for interview, please be prepared to hold your interview virtually.

What you will be working on:

  • Interpret classroom lectures and discussions, technical material for Deaf students, using American Sign Language (ASL) and/or English (voicing).

  • Interpret college activities, meetings, events etc. outside of the classroom as scheduled.

  • Interpret for Deaf students; contributions, reports, questions, or discussions to the instructor and to the class.

  • Working with the instructor and Deaf student to select the best physical layout for interpreting services, including lighting, seating arrangement, and line of sight to visual aids and instructor.

  • Provide ASL expansion of cultural information and subject specific terminology for Deaf students, may provide interpretation and explanation for classroom and subject matter terminology or tutoring outside of classroom if appropriate and as directed by Program Specialist or Director.

  • Inform the coordinator of interpreting services of any problems arising in the classroom that inhibit interpretation.

  • Keep a record of interpretation done daily and provide a monthly summary of the hours spent with each class; keep daily time sheets.

  • Periodically attend meetings on interpreting techniques and methods.

  • May assist in the ARC during scheduled hours when interpreting hours are not needed.

  • May assist interpreter scheduler in planning schedules for quarter.

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • Two or more years of college-level course work, experience in interpretation for the deaf may be substituted for college course work on a year-for-year basis.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications.

  • Two or more years of experience in interpreting for the deaf of which one year must have been in a classroom setting.

Physical Requirements:

The position

  • Must be able to sit or stand for 20 minutes at a time while interpreting.

  • Must be able to interpret both in-person and over Zoom.
