DCBOH PH Workforce - Developmental Specialist

The DeKalb County Board of Health (DCBOH) Public Health Workforce Initiative aims to increase the public health workforce by providing opportunities for learning experiences and on-the-job training to advance more equitable health outcomes for underserved communities in DeKalb County, Georgia. Members will work with DCBOH's program staff to learn how to manage and operate public health-related programs that will help meet communities' public health needs by providing capacity, support, and increased awareness of COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.

The members' roles and responsibilities will focus on community engagement, health promotion, and support and direct services. This is a three quarter-time position, living allowance of $13,110.00, 1200 hours during the service year, 25 to 30 hours per week, and a college graduate is required. MCH programs work collaboratively internally to provide services to infants, toddlers, and families.

Children First is the single entry point for all child health programs, including Babies Can't Wait (BCW). BCW provides Early Intervention (EI) Services for children with significant developmental delays or categorial diagnoses. These programs provide a family-centered approach with wrap-around services. The Developmental Specialist determines eligibility for services by completing a series of screenings and assessments.

Service Coordinators connect parents with support groups and counseling. The family receives a full evaluation with a Developmental Specialist and Speech Pathologist or Physical Therapist at no cost. The BCW program utilizes the Primary Service Provider (PSP) model for service delivery.

This model allows families access to a team of therapists and developmental specialists. The BCW programs have worked to improve early literacy in infants and toddlers by partnering with the Reach Out & Read Initiative. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.

Member Duties : The members' roles and responsibilities include screening, assessment, and care plan development. The member will work on various teams within Maternal Child Health programs to support early intervention for infants and toddlers with significant delays.

The member will be trained in assessment and care plan development. Under general supervision, the member will be trained to assess, screen, and counsel clients in various program areas. The member will perform social services activities to enhance or meet the client's functioning capacity and develop or participate in case management and care plans.

Provides care coordination services to clients. The member will be trained to administer several tools, including the Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI) and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). The AmeriCorps staff will go into the community to provide screenings and assessments for children 0 -5. Staff will also complete home visits for medically fragile clients.
