Daycare Cook | North Charleston

The Sunshine House Early Learning Academy is seeking Daycare Cooks for our schools in North Charleston.

No nights! No weekends! Have fun and make a difference every day.

Pay rate of $10-14 per hour, based on experience, education and credentials.

Position Available at:

  • Sunshine House of North Charleston at NAD Road
  • Sunshine House of North Charleston at Salt Pointe Pkwy

Cook Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and distributes meals/snacks for children and staff according to guidelines and provided menus.
  • Follows daily menu that incorporates USDA, licensing and/or health department regulations.
  • Ensures safe food preparations and proper sanitation methods are used and maintains a safe kitchen/pantry area.
  • Maintains inventory of food and supplies.


  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Work experience in cooking and/or food preparation for large group food service, preferably in a childcare center, preferred.

Under direct supervision of Region Training Coordinator, provides frontline WIC Nutrition Services as assigned.</p><ul><li><p>Assists Site Supervisors and Nutrition Supervisor in the orientation of nutrition staff members who will be providing services for the WIC program. Creates, coordinates, provides, and monitors the training of all new WIC certifiers according to OPHN and WIC program guidelines. This training will also include training nutrition staff members to perform the hemoglobin test for WIC applicants in compliance with OSHA and CLIA guidelines.</p></li><li><p>Provides WIC certifications including health history, anthropometrics, immunization screening, hemoglobin, evaluation of risk status, nutrition and health counseling, prescription of WIC food package, documentation, and referrals following program standards and protocols.</p></li><li><p>Works closely with other members of the WIC management team and acts as an active participant in developing and implementing Continuous Quality Improvement reviews and processes. Assists with the maintenance and upkeep of nutrition education materials and resources in work area. Evaluates needs for and develops in-service training in areas related to WIC certification procedures and delivery of group nutrition activities.</p></li><li><p>Works in clinic or performs outreach duties when not actively training nutrition staff. Instructs virtual nutrition education classes as required.</p></li><li><p>Completes at least 8 hours in continuing education, 6 training hours must be from DHEC Central Office</p></li><li><p>Performs other duties as assigned including, but not limited to Lowcountry region emergency response, etc.</p></li></ul><p>Minimum and Additional Requirements</p><p>State Minimum Requirements:Some positions require registration or eligibility for registration by the American Dietetics Association. A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor's degree in any field and registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting. Some positions require registration with the American Dietetics Association and a valid license from the South Carolina Panel for Dietetics.</p><p>Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.</p><p>Agency Additional Requirements:A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor's degree in any field and registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting. Some positions require registration with the American Dietetics Association and a valid license from the South Carolina Panel for Dietetics.</p><p>Considerable knowledge of the principles and practice of normal nutrition. Working knowledge of counseling and education principles. <br><br> Ability to work well with people of varying economic and education levels. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the health care team and the public. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in written form. Ability to use a computer for word processing and data entry.</p><p>Must follow agency policies on confidentiality. Travel to all clinic sites in Region. <br><br> Must be able to lift 30 pounds. Participates in disaster preparedness activities as outlined in the DHEC Region/County disaster plan, which includes staffing of special need shelters as directed.</p><p>Participates in disaster preparedness and response as outlined by the DHEC regional/county plan, during hazardous weather, or declatation of emergency. During such times, employee is designated as an essential employee and is subject to duty/call on a 24 hour basis. <br><br> Must be able to travel to all other clinic sites in the Region. Have a valid SC drivers license, use of personal vehicle. Must be able to speak, read and write English fluently. <br><br> Must be able to drive car and lift a maximum of thirty (30) pounds. Preferred Qualifications</p><p>Preferred 6 months of SCDHEC WIC Nutritionist Experience.</p><p>Additional Comments</p><p>Immunization: All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis, Varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.</p><p>Public Health staff with job-specific risk of COVID-19 exposure who choose not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine or provide documentation of prior vaccination, or who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical contraindications or religious exemption, will be required to receive routine periodic COVID-19 testing by DHEC on a weekly basis. Vaccinated employees will not be required to receive periodic testing but may elect to be tested to monitor their health status.</p><p>State Disaster Plan: In accordance with the State's Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DHEC employees may be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster.</p><p>College Transcripts: Applicants indicating college credit or degree(s) on the application may upload an unofficial copy of the transcript as an attachment to the application.
