Reports To: Principal/Assistant Principal or Designee

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the administrative team or designee, a day-to-day substitute supports the continuation of learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

In addition, a day-to-day substitute teacher is required to reflect the school's mission and vision in interactions with students, staff, families, and stakeholders and elevate the school's image in the eyes of the community. Day-to-day substitute teachers are expected to follow the school's protocols and rules.

Varying work hours and days are required. Day-to-Day substitute teachers are hourly employees. There is no guarantee of any minimum hours of work.

Key Competencies/Duties:

• Follows existing lesson plans to provide instruction to assigned students,

• Establishes positive learning expectation standards for all pupils,

• Applies contemporary principles of learning theory and teaching methodology, drawing from the range of instructional materials available in the school,

• Establishes and maintains reasonable rules of conduct within the classroom and on school grounds, including, but not limited to, hallways and lunchrooms, consistent with the provisions of the CICS Code of Conduct and published school rules,

• Maintains accurate attendance records and seating charts;

• Encourages student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept; ensures fairness in teacher-pupil relationships and exhibits an understanding and respect for students;

• Utilizes appropriate resources available in the school.

• Reflects, supports, and promotes the mission and vision of the school as well as the principles of D.E.I.

• Demonstrates preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.

• Supports the creation of inclusive, identity-affirming spaces for students.

• Implements professional practice and responsibilities, demonstrating cultural competence.

• Implements D.E.I principles in interactions with members of the school community.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

• A strong desire and commitment to urban education.

• Ability to implement a lesson plan, knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching, knowledge of classroom and behavior management techniques.

• Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs.

• Ability to cooperate with the school staff and administration in the development and implementation of an articulated program of instruction.

• Ability to work effectively with pupils, parents and guardians, staff members..

• Solid verbal and written communication skills, good interpersonal skills, skill in exercising sound and professional judgment.

• Ability to implement school protocols (i.e. taking attendance, supporting mask-wearing mandates, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree (Preferred)

• Professional Educator License or Substitute Teaching License issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (Preferred)

• Previous teaching experience (Strongly Preferred)

Hourly Wages

Day-to-Day substitutes are paid $28-$30 per hour, commensurate with experience and certification. There are no benefits associated with this position, nor is a minimum number of hours guaranteed.
