Provides a high level of support in the development, implementation, and administration of City wide physical databases.

Selection Process: Applicants whose education, training and experience most closely meet the needs of the position may be invited to participate in a selection process to include a panel interview. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include:

  • Fingerprinting

  • Criminal Background for the past 7 years

  • Drug Screen

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or a related field from an accredited educational institution.

  • A minimum of five years of experience in database administration in Microsoft SQL or Oracle environments is required.

  • A minimum of five years of experience in database design.

  • A minimum of one year working with clustered database environments and supporting high-availability.

  • An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Essential Functions

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to any combination of the following tasks:

  • Implements and maintains physical databases in a distributed computing environment.

  • Implements organizational data backup and restore processes and systems.

  • Establishes of organizational data standards.

  • Performs data modeling and database design.

  • Performs data warehouse design and implementation.

  • Evaluates and make recommendations on new database methodologies or implementation strategies.

  • Consults with Information Technology teams to develop application installation and maintenance procedures

  • Monitors application systems performance and recommends methods for improving efficiency

  • Interfaces with users, consultants, technical teams and vendors for maximum guidance in determining the most appropriate selection

  • Maintains security and integrity controls of the database, and database software tools

  • Participates in a rotation for on call support during non-business hours.

The Database Administrator will work with DB2 z/OS and IMS databases and will be responsible for monitoring, analysis and tuning database performance at both the system and application level. The Database Administrator will also be responsible for, but not limited to: * Forecast long-range requirements for database administration * Provide physical database design as well as participate in application/system architecture design and infrastructure planning (server, disk, CPU, memory) * Design and implement database backup, recovery strategies, and disaster recovery documentation * SQL performance monitoring and tuning * Complete and manage DBA Service Requests from project development teams to meet reasonable project development deadlines and negotiate on-hold requests toward prompt resolution * Analyze enterprise applications and identify opportunities for improvement * Must be available off-hours for deployments, job monitoring, and support * Must be able to comply with Pager Duties: Delivering 24 X 7 operational database support Required Qualifications 5+ years of DBA experience including setup and execution of standard database utilities, RACF security systems, database performance, availability monitoring, or DB2 upgrades and features * 5+ years of experience in IBM DB2 DBA tools, IBM JCL, or comparable tools * 5+ years of IT experience Preferred Qualifications Must have strong written and verbal communication skills * Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or 2 years for every year a 4-year is not obtained. i.e. 8+ years of work experience if no degree.
