Job Description:

The Database Administrator is responsible for the design, development and implementation of logical and physical layers for SQL Server and other various databases. Recommend solutions for database security, testing, data backup and recovery specifications. The DBA is also responsible for performance monitoring and tuning in a high-availability environment to support growth of large applications within the company. They provide technical assistance in developing conceptual and logical database design and physical databases. This role requires onsite interview with our Database team and we cannot at this time do any video interviews.


  • Develop and implement strategies and solutions for managing data backup, recovery and replication

  • Develop and implement processes to monitor system performance and tuning improvements and upgrades

  • Manages and maintains data in all production and non-production databases and replication

  • Monitors and maintains database systems and troubleshoots problems.

  • Maintains data integrity and security (manages roles and permissions of database users)

  • Utilizes tools such as SQL Profiler and other Monitoring and Performance Tuning Tools for database

  • Generates traces and execution plans

  • Deploy new database code releases to production

  • Participate in the database team on-call rotation

  • Test and implement database upgrades and new features

  • Keep database administration skills current through study and research


  • Strong Experience with High Availability including Failover Clustering, Database Mirroring and Always On Availability Groups

  • 5+ years experience with database administration of large-scale mission critical databases including troubleshooting.

  • 3+ years working in one or more ETL tools (DTS, SSIS, etc)

  • Storage experience and basic knowledge with other RDBMS is a plus.

  • Experience with SQL Server high availability database design, architecture and configuration desired

  • Experience writing T-SQL and stored procedures and query tuning on online transaction systems

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, able to analyze problems and solve them creatively

  • Detail-oriented with ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field

  • A strong desire to learn new technologies

About the Mercury Solution Support Center (MST) As an organization jointly owned by the business and IT, the MST is a centralized and global organization which will provide operational support for the delivered Mercury solution and manage and support the Mercury user community. The MST will play an integral role in governance of the Mercury solution and the global template from both a business and IT perspective and will evolve to work closely with the business in enabling the benefit and value to be realized from the investment in Program Mercury and to set the furture direction and technology road map to support Vision 2020. Technical integration management is one of the four core functions of the Mercury support Team and its key to Operational Stability function will provide an appropriately resourced and skilled organization that will: * accept the delivered Mercury solution from the Program and provide integrated, seamless functional and technical support * take accountability for the delivered Mercury solution and deliver services, in line with defined service targets, to the Mercury user community * act as the single point of contact for vendors delivering support services across the integrated Mercury application landscape * enable the Program Team to focus on the continued deployment of the global template and ongoing localization requirements. Job Summary: Senior SQL database administrator/consultant with a demonstrated history of working as a database administrator in a combination of implementation projects and post go-live support projects on large complex multi-system landscapes. We are looking for a "hands-on" resource with solid technical skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Strong experience on SQL database administration is required. Experience working as SQL DBA on SAP projects and/or as SAP HANA database administrator is desired. Having experience on SAP systems integration, Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Requirements Analysis, and Business Analysis will be a plus. Some of the key responsibilities will include but not be limited to review existing Production and non-Production database systems to identify gaps and inconsistencies, and translate these into recommendations and/or requirements for infrastructure changes when applicable. Make recommendations and support implementations of new tools and technologies. Engage with firm's operations teams and third party vendors on an as needed basis. Gather and analyze information for developing and modifying database systems and recommend the use of specific methods and techniques to facilitate development. Essential Functions of the Job: * Provide technical support of the core, integrated applications in the relevant area of the Mercury solution * Perform proactive monitoring of MS SQL Server databases of the core SAP applications * Provide guidance in managing incidents /break fixes for Production database systems * Ensures that changes to SQL databases are viable and do not cause a detrimental impact to Production * Retain in-house technical knowledge to validate and where appropriate challenge existing or new technical solutions delivered by the program or external vendors * Review Production and Test SQL databases design, configuration and set up to identify potential gaps and identify possible solutions for bridging these gaps. * Provide tuning recommendations to improve performance and stability. * Create detailed solution documentation and presentations * Make informed judgments regarding issues which may potentially impact the quality of services delivered via the MST * Analyze SQL databases performance based on data provided and interpret the data to determine the quality of the service – validate this against the user perception of the service * Determine when it is appropriate to escalate and use judgement and experience and to determine the most effective course of action * Leveraging standard processes and architecting innovative solutions for timely execution within the agreed time lines and the cost * Educate/train fellow team members where appropriate Analytical/Decision Making Responsibilities: * Make informed judgments and take appropriate action regarding issues which may potentially impact the quality of services delivered via the MST * Assist leadership to translate business requirements into the right technical solution and take appropriate steps to define action plans which are detailed, meaningful and meet internal Mercury processes and business expectations * Analyze service performance based on data provided and interpret the data to determine the quality of the service – validate this against the user perception of the service * Determine when it is appropriate to escalate and use judgement and experience and to determine the most effective course of action Knowledge, Experience and Skills Requirements: * 12+ years of solid SQL database administration experience with thorough understanding of relational database design, concepts and best practices * Strong knowledge of Microsoft based technologies, including SQL Server 2008 – 2017 and Windows 2012/2016 * Experience in SQL database performance tuning, query optimization using Performance Monitor, DMVs and other related monitoring and troubleshooting tools * Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, replication issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc. * Database growth vs disk space available, audits, system monitoring (I/O bottlenecks, CPU & memory utilization, etc.) and other resources contention. * Experience working with failover clustering, SAN replication, and other high availability technologies * Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands. * Strong knowledge of Clustering, Always-ON availability group. * Strong knowledge of how indexes, index management, integrity checks, statistics work and how they can be optimized and managed effectively * SQL Development - ability to review and troubleshoot SQL queries and assist developers (stored procs, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints) * Experience designing/working with database backup and restore strategies * Maintenance Plans recommendations and best practices * Good knowledge on VMware virtualization technologies and storage systems like NAS, SAN * Experience in implementing operational automation * Supervision Responsibilities: * Able to act independently, seeking consultation guidance and advice as appropriate from lead * Self-motivated with the ability to be proactive and work well under tight deadlines and flexible hours. * Team player with strong intercommunication skills and the ability to provide clear documentation of production processes as necessary. * Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
