The Department of Administration, Office of Information Technology, is recruiting for a Database Specialist 1/2/3 in Juneau or Anchorage!

What You Will Be Doing

The multiple compensation range Database Specialist positions are designed to allow you to join our Database team at your current Database Specialist skill level. After that, you can advance your career and increase your compensation as you expand your skills and gain experience, and ultimately flex to a Database Specialist 3.

For example, if hired at the apprentice level (DBA 1), you have the opportunity and path to expand your knowledge and experience and achieve journeyman (DBA 2) and then senior DBA 3, all within the same team and without additional application or hiring processes. While doing that, other Database Specialists will guide you as you learn to provision database hosting servers, migrate databases, automate database maintenance routine, secure database environments, learn principles of database design and architecture, and database performance tuning.

Analytical capabilities and experiences with server logs, application logs, search engines, vendor documentation, and a foundational understanding of the network and application stacks will assist you to troubleshoot database issues to resolution.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

The Department of Administration, Office of Information Technology (OIT) Database Services Team is primarily working remotely through telework. That can possibly change based on State of Alaska policies. Staff typically have a dedicated workspace or office, depending upon their primary location.

We anticipate an in-office work environment to start, however, State of Alaska policy provides teleworking opportunities.

The person we are looking for will use their existing skills and experience and increase their skills and experience through team-provided training and mentoring to actively contribute to the success of the Database Services Team:

  • The person is capable of effectively and professionally communicating within the Database Team and customers, team with them to gain consensus, and effectively deliver agreed-on services. To what degree is dependent upon the individual's level (DBA 1, 2, or 3).

  • They will possess, or learn and gain, experience troubleshooting complex computer systems, in relation to the database services they rely upon.

  • The individual will have skill in a programming or scripting method in a commonly accepted programming or scripting language (C#, PowerShell, Java etc.) to assist in task automation and database support functions.

  • They will have experience querying database systems in order to retrieve data, including basic knowledge of the principles of indexing and efficient organization of database searches.

Minimum Qualifications

Database Specialist 1

Four years of computer programming experience in a recognized computer language. At least one year of the four must have involved programming database applications at the full proficiency programmer level in a wide area networked DBMS environment. This required experience includes, but is not limited to, work such as an Analyst/Programmer 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Four years of work experience supporting and maintaining a wide area networked DBMS in a database administration environment that included: 1) leading or serving as shift supervisor for computer operations in a mainframe or database server computer environment or assisting and training on designing and implementing basic computer software; and 2) at least six months actual programming experience in an internal database language. The lead/shift supervisor and design and implementation experience includes, but is not limited to, work such as a Data Processing Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or equivalent experience elsewhere.

Database Specialist 2

One year of database management systems experience at a level equivalent to a Database Specialist 1 for the State of Alaska.

Database Specialist 3

Two years database management systems experience at a level equivalent to a Database Specialist 2 with the State of Alaska.

For some positions in these job classes a background investigation including fingerprinting is required.

These systems include on-premises virtualization platforms, Oracle on-premises platforms and also Oracle Cloud platforms.
