General Summary/Overview Statement

The Research Information Systems & Computing (RISC) group at Mass General Brigham is looking for a talented and highly motivated Applications/Data Analyst to join our team supporting clinical research for multiple sponsored projects. As a member of the team, you will work directly with the Sr. Manager, our group of skilled analysts and engineers, and our clients to develop new insights from complex data sets for improvements in healthcare treatment options and other research questions. Responsibilities include support of medical record data sets, concept coding, metadata creation and other responsibilities related to the creation, execution and management of data to support our client products. The candidate should have prior experience working with clinical data and should have an understanding of healthcare data delivery. This position requires in-depth knowledge of data and databases.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary point person for understanding the utilization and boundaries of medical record data as it relates to clients' requirements

  • Assist the product/data owner in understanding and interpreting data sets via regular discussions and/or data documentation

  • Develop SQL queries, views, and/or stored procedures to produce datasets as requested

  • Design, develop, and migrate SQL views, tables, and stored procedures, tailored to each unique project requirements

  • Create approaches/methodologies for analytically processing data sets to meet project requirements

  • Perform exploratory analyses to clarify the structure of data and how it can be used to support new insights into novel therapeutic options

  • Normalize and extract, transform and load (ETL) external data sets

  • Quality assurance and control activities for data level testing. The analyst will be expected to create, perform and document quality assurance of data sets, including the creation and documentation of formal test plans for unit and integrated data integrity testing

  • Develop, test, execute and document strategies for extracting and/or visualizing aggregate data

  • Participate in group discussions on security strategies and implement security requirements to ensure patient privacy and comply with regulatory requirements

  • Collaborate with team members and clients (as needed) to determine analytical requirements

  • Plan, document, and implement systems that manage complex data flow and data update strategies

  • Work collaboratively with the team to create and document policies regarding data usage, users, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and privacy committee

  • Assist developers with implementing data access auditing features in compliance with data usage policies

  • Communicate progress status against project plans to project manager and key stakeholders

  • Compile and report data quality metrics

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelors Degree in related field, Masters Degree Preferred

  • 5 years of healthcare IT experience with a knowledge of clinical data

  • 5 years of experience with SQL coding

  • Proficiency with SQL relational databases, preferably Microsoft SQL Server and SQL Server Management Studio Tools

  • Solid knowledge of SQL and construction of stored procedures

  • Demonstrated experience reading, interpreting and writing technical documentation, test plans, functional and technical specifications

  • Familiarity with at least one scripting language is a plus: Python, Ruby, PHP, VBScript

  • A combination of education and experience may be substituted for requirements

Skills/Abilities/Required Competencies

  • Knowledge and understanding of electronic health records

  • Knowledge of statistics and healthcare analytics preferred

  • Excellent organizational skills with an attention for detail and ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross functional teams including staff at all levels of the organization including both technical and non-technical personnel

  • Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, work independently and be flexible in a multi-site environment

  • Ability to work independently and in groups to effectively participate in the software development lifecycle

  • Strong desire to embrace challenges, willingness to ask questions and rapidly acquire new skills

  • Exceptional problem solving, analytical and negotiation skills

  • Ability to review project deliverables for completeness, quality, and compliance with established project standards

  • Ability to effectively translate business requirements to functional requirements

  • Ability to successfully negotiate and collaborate with others of different skill sets, backgrounds and levels within and external to the organization

Working Conditions

MGB has implemented special remote working policies due to COVID-19. These policies are subject to change; however, it is currently expected that this position will work remotely (e.g. from home) full time through June 2021

If onsite:

  • Standard office environment with possible local travel to Mass General Brigham sites.

  • Currently this position is working remotely, but may be required to return to standard office environment in future

The focus of the Senior Data Scientist will be to develop and refine algorithms to identify disease phenotypes that will be used for research, clinical applications, and beyond. Additional areas of focus may include Predictive Model development and validation, using NLP to extract information from complex data sets, and additional machine learning algorithms. Principal Duties and Responsibilities * Lead clinical research projects as determined by the research sponsor and Sr. Manager. * Plan, document, and implement systems that manage complex data flow and data update strategies * Work collaboratively with the team to create and document policies regarding data usage, users, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and privacy committee * Research and develop statistical learning models for data analysis * Keep up-to-date with latest technology trends * Communicate results and ideas with co-investigators and team members * Implement new statistical or other mathematical methodologies as needed for specific models or analysis * Optimize joint development efforts through appropriate database use and project design * Work with sponsored and academic collaborators to understand needs and implement cutting edge algorithms with machine learning * Communicate progress status against project plans to project manager and key stakeholders * Use the Mass General Brigham values to govern decisions, actions and behaviors.
