Skills developed in this position cover the full spectrum including data science, analytical thinking, data visualization, communication and team work. In this role you will be implementing solutions that enable software system to recommend or automate data-driven decisions. This role will work on the Infrastructure Data Science Team to create solutions which increase stability, create clarity, and reduce the operational costs of highly visible applications and software systems for Northern Trust. These solutions require the use of Big Data tools such as Hadoop, Splunk, and ELK, as well as integration with tools such as Service-Now. In order to succeed at this role a candidate should have the ability to understand modern techniques for data analysis which include but are not limited to:

Minimum skills:
5+ years of experience
Predictive modeling (eg: neural networks, logistic regression, variable reduction, imputation)
Statistical Analysis with R, Python, or other scripting language
Linux command line (eg: Bash, AWK, Perl, Sed)
Familiar with RDBMS concepts
Data visualization (eg: ggplot, Python, Splunk, Tableau, Excel)
Proven quick self-directed learner
Good communication skills
Team Player
BA or BS in Math, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field
Exposure to the areas of AI, ML, and Data Science with an ability and desire to grow
Preferred Skills:
Machine learning libraries (eg: Tensor Flow, Keras)
Hadoop (Hive, Impala, MapReduce)
Cloud (AWS, Azure)
IT Infrastructure Engineering exposure
Regular expressions
Infrastructure components (e.g. VMs, Servers, Routers, Network Switches, Accelerators, etc.)
Diagnosis and Tuning experience, with Applications or Infrastructure Components
Predictive modeling (eg: Bayesian inference, time series forecasting, signal detection, queuing optimization, clustering, survival analysis)
Splunk Machine Learning Toolkit, Data visualization in Splunk
Ability to code in an Object Oriented Language such as Java or C++
Data transformation and Conformal Mapping/Decomposition

As an Industrial Engineer(IE) – Data Scientist(DS) at Viasat you are joining a growing and dynamic group with tangible opportunity to make your own, personal impact on the competencies and direction of the team. A Viasat Industrial Engineer – Data Scientist will be integrated into the IE team and predominately interface with IE – Continuous Improvement, design engineering, manufacturing engineering, and test engineering. This role's core responsibility is the data analytics that enable the identification of opportunities for improvement. Ultimately, you are responsible for the generation and validation of improvement ideas. As a successful IE-DS team member you will use your extensive knowledge of data management to pull records from internal test databases, WIP trackers, and Oracle records. You will aggregate, distill, and communicate opportunities for improvement to reduce cost, improve performance, and optimize capacity. This role will examine both data generated from tested unit performance and manufacturing processes. For example, you may be challenged to interface with design engineering providing solutions for poor yields as well as manufacturing teams to reduce queue variability and wait times. A Viasat IE – Data Scientist will be able to effectively use Juypter and other data analysis and visualization tools to quantitatively assess current production and business systems. For manufacturing processes based improvements, you will also need to quantify your ideas with Discrete Event simulation. This role demands an innate aptitude and understanding of data analysis techniques supported by a holistic knowledge of continuous improvement and manufacturing operations.
