Job Description Summary:

The Research Division of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center is seeking a dynamic and skilled data scientist to support a wide range of research projects related to primary care and health outcomes. This position requires a unique blend of expertise in biostatistics, data analysis, and computational programming. The successful candidate will play a critical role in multivariable statistical analysis, regression analysis, cost effectiveness analyses, and preparing data for academic publications and federal/private grant applications. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of PhD, MD, JD, and MPH researchers and significantly contribute to the advancement of biomedical and community health research.

Required Qualifications

Education: A master's degree or equivalent experience in biostatistics.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience with cost-effectiveness analyses and analytic software

  • Experience in developing production-quality graphs and data visualizations

  • Experience with large medical databases, such as the NIH All of Us database.

  • Prior experience at an academic institution where education, research and service are combined within the overall institutional mission.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in R statistical language and Python programming.

  • Proficiency in SPSS or SAS (in addition to R and python)

  • Additional programming experience beyond R and Python.

  • Strong background in multivariable statistics and regression analysis.

  • Familiarity with SQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgresSQL).

  • Ability to work independently to solve technical problems.

  • Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, enabling the clear presentation of complex statistical concepts to non-experts.

  • Demonstrated competence in handling large datasets.

  • Ability to operate in both Windows and Linux/Unix environments.

  • A quantitative degree (mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, etc.) with demonstrated statistical experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research projects with tangible outcomes.

  • Technical writing skills, particularly experience with federal grant applications and scientific publications

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Design and implement biostatistical analyses for various clinical and public health research projects using the R statistical language.

  • Conduct descriptive, bivariable, and multivariable statistical analyses, regression analysis and cost-effectiveness analyses as required for research projects.

  • Implement cost effectiveness analyses for social and biomedical interventions.

  • Manage and analyze large datasets, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.

  • Use Python and R programming for data manipulation, analysis, and visualization.

  • Utilize SQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) for efficient data retrieval and management.

  • Contribute to the writing and preparation of NIH and other grant applications, ensuring the robustness and validity of statistical and power analyses presented.

  • Collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and partners (PhD, MD, JD, MPH, patient representatives, community partners) to conceptualize and execute statistical analyses that support research objectives and study questions.

  • Solve technical problems independently and consult with senior researchers as needed to address complex analytical challenges.

  • Collaborate with study investigative teams to design parameters for cost-effectiveness analyses and execute analyses.

  • Assist with the development and execution of data use agreements with various study partners.

  • Oversee data sharing of project data that is deidentified and required to be publicly shared as part of federal grant requirements.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of new statistical methods and data collection processes.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable data privacy and protection guidelines and regulations.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of current statistical methodologies, programming languages, and database management systems relevant to biomedical and public health research.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
