The Center for Survey Research (CSR) at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service seeks a Data Management Analyst to lead data management and analysis across the Center's various survey projects at the University of Virginia.

As a full-service survey center committed to community-engaged, public impact research, CSR brings the best tools of quantitative and qualitative social science to the service of local government and state agencies, academic researchers, and community non-profits. On behalf of these clients, CSR designs and administers custom surveys across a variety of topics spanning a wide range of study populations and geographies. CSR's team includes professional researchers, student research assistants, and administrative support personnel. Senior staff members, who directly oversee all CSR survey projects, make frequent contributions to the academic and professional survey research literature. CSR typically manages between 15 and 20 active survey projects at a given time.

The successful candidate will:

  • Coordinate directly with the Principal Investigator and Project Coordinator to define analysis needs for projects, set schedules, and ensure project research needs are met in a timely manner.

  • Perform programming, data preparation, and analysis tasks using SPSS, Excel, R, and other software as appropriate. Some of these tasks will be delegated to research assistants under the incumbent's supervision. Tasks include:

  • Prepares clean data files using raw data files from data entry, self-administered web responses, and/or phone interviews.

  • Weights data, according to sampling design and/or post-stratification parameters as appropriate.

  • Merges, modifies, and edits data files as needed for analysis.

  • Analyzes data using SPSS and other statistical packages as needed.

  • Advises on appropriate data visualizations.

  • Articulates key findings from quantitative analysis.

  • Provide training to student RAs with respect to data management and analysis as related tasks arise over course of project tasking.

  • Position will be responsible for quality review for any data preparation or analysis tasks delegated to an RA.

  • If candidate is interested, they may participate in the preparation of written reports and/or oral presentation of results.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with three years of work experience in related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in data science, statistics, sociology, psychology, political science, economics, or related social science or public health area.

  • Comfortability with handling raw data and performing data management with attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot.

  • Understanding of advanced statistical analysis techniques for the social sciences.

  • Routine statistical analyses for this position include preparation of sampling and post-stratification weights, inferential statistics, and psychometric analysis.

  • Must have mastery with at least one statistical software package or programming language (e.g., SPSS, Stata, Python, R, etc.).

  • Strong research and technical writing skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet project deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work with others as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years' professional experience conducting and/or administering research.

  • Experience conducting survey research and/or handling survey data.

  • Proficiency in SPSS.

  • Ability to provide effective oral presentations for professional and nonprofessional audiences.

  • Project management certification a plus.

Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job may occasionally request traveling some distance to attend meetings and conferences.

This position is hybrid, located in Charlottesville, VA. Position is expected to be carried out in-person a minimum of two days per week.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
