Vertex's Data Strategy and Solutions Team is seeking an associate data engineer who is adept at testing pipelines and systems to find bugs and data inconsistencies. As an individual contributor on this team, you will work closely with data scientists and data engineers to develop and implement test plans that ensure data quality throughout product architectures. While data quality assurance will be your primary responsibility, the role requires that you be versatile, applying your skills across data science, data engineering, and business communication. The ideal candidate will bring a keen eye for detail, an understanding of data engineering and data science, and enthusiasm to contribute to machine learning-based products and solutions for biotech.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute test cases that validate data cleaning, pipelines, calculations, and assumptions (ensure correctness and completeness of findings)

  • Develop, maintain, and run test automation for data products that are being operationalized (guard against regressions during ongoing development and enhancement) utilizing DbFit or another automated testing suite

  • Find and document data quality issues, data security weaknesses, and privacy concerns

  • Collaborate effectively with data engineers, data scientists, and business partners

  • Bring an entrepreneurial mindset, openness, transparency, and collegiality to your everyday work

  • Actively participate in the entire product development lifecycle

  • Support product manager and business partner to define and develop product

  • Perform exploratory data analysis and present findings to the broader team

  • Propose new solutions and technologies that could transform the way we handle data and contribute to the business

  • Develop your skillset to include advanced data science and/or data engineering capabilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science, Math or similar engineering or computational discipline (e.g. Physics, Computational Biology) or commensurate training and experience

  • Experience in a quality engineering, or similar, role including both manual and automated testing

  • Experience with relational databases and writing SQL queries; proficient in SQL

  • Experience with data quality, cleaning and masking techniques

  • Conceptual understanding of ETL processes, data architectures, and batch and real-time processing

  • Unwavering commitment to data privacy standards and ethics

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and a proven ability to work and collaborate in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Experience in Python, R, and/or Scala

  • Experience in OBIEE, MicroStrategy, Tableau, and/or RShiny

  • Experience in product development

  • An interest in data science concepts (e.g. machine learning, natural language processing) and/or data engineering concepts (e.g. noSQL databases, cloud computing)

  • Understanding of the healthcare and biotech industries as well as general business operations.
