The Data Engineer aims to provide data in a ready-to-use form to enable a diverse set of business processes. Responsible for design, build, maintenance, and production support of data processing pipelines and systems. The Data Engineer will work closely with Data Analysts, Data Scientists, business and technical teams to deliver outcomes that are secure, reliable, fault-tolerant, scalable, quality and efficient. Applying analytics (e.g., machine learning) and statistical models, as needed. The Data Engineer can also provide data analysis and extracts on large and complex data sets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build, quality, maintenance, and production support of data processing pipelines and systems (Real-time and batch)

  • Design, build, quality, maintenance, and production support of RESTful APIs

  • Responsible for ensuring data processing pipelines and systems are: secure, reliable, fault-tolerant, scalable, accurate and efficient

  • Perform data analysis and provide extracts on large and complex data sets

  • Data Wrangling

  • Deliver automated functional tests on data processing pipelines and systems

  • Full participation in the assigned Agile team (e.g., standups, planning, peer reviews, etc.)

  • Provide on-call support (24x7); may be rotational

  • Collaborate within and outside assigned Agile team

  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve skillsets

  • Proactively identify and communicate roadblocks. Evaluate and suggest alternatives

  • Support multiple projects and accommodate frequent interruptions and changing priorities

  • Take on research projects to improve data processing by leveraging machine learning

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors degree in Information Systems or Computer science (e.g. specialization: Machine learning/Artificial Intelligence /Visualization, databases, and Big Data)
  • 5+ years of work experience in a Data Engineer, ETL Developer or similar role

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Must have experience in a big data environment (such as: Hadoop, Spark, Impala, Solr, HBase, Kudu)

  • Must have experience designing, building and operating in-production big data/stream processing and/or enterprise data warehouse

  • Must have experience with large scale, concurrent applications

  • Must have experience with at least one compiled language (Java)

  • Must have experience building backend RESTful web services

  • Must have experience with SQL and relational database systems (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server)

  • Must have experience with Linux

  • Must have experience working in a DevOps culture or concepts

  • Familiarity with common data science toolkits, such as R and Python

  • Strong problem-solving capabilities and exhibits strong Computer Science Fundamentals

  • Experience working with Agile and Lean Practices

  • Excellent communication skills

Responsibilities Strategy & Planning * Collaborate with technical staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes. * Assess current technical portfolio and existing or emerging technologies and provide expert insight to enhance future capabilities, effectiveness and security. * Collaborate with executive team members, decision makers, and other stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues. Acquisition & Deployment * Analyze, recommend, deploy, configure and maintain applications and platforms. * Recommend, select, plan, and execute enhancements to existing applications and platforms. * Contribute to implementation and enhancement decisions by performing cost-benefit and return on investment analyses. * Interact and negotiate with vendors and contractors to secure system-related products and services. Operational Management * Gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems. * Propose and create system design models, specifications, diagrams, and other documents as required. * Design and perform server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the company's disaster recovery and business continuity strategies. * Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems. * Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems. * Monitor and test system performance; prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports. * Provide orientation and training to end users and technical staff as required.
