POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVES
A Data Engineer will design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality data and reporting assets to meet business and customer needs. The Data Engineer will work on initiatives that include:
Responsible for reporting assets, including reports, data warehouse, and analytics.
Support existing systems, including deeply understanding their functionality and how they provide business value to our internal and external customers.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDING
Maintain, write, and review high-quality code that satisfies customer needs and strives for simplicity, clarity, and testability.
Be able to assist and backup the lead database administrator (DBA) with various support tasks.
Promote a collaborative team environment and work closely with colleagues to achieve business objectives.
Collaborate with colleagues (e.g., product owners, project managers, developers, quality assurance engineers, and end users) to understand functional and non-functional requirements.
Investigate and propose solutions during design and development phases.
Participate in the scope of work estimation and forecasting.
Adhere to architecture, design, implementation, and security standards and best practices.
Improve the performance of existing queries by diagnosing and resolving critical issues.
Prepare technical documentation, including data design, test results, and technical manuals.
Adhere to established development practices and processes.
Other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES INCLUDING
Strong proficiency in database concepts (e.g. T-SQL, stored procedures, structured views, triggers, table design, linked servers, synonyms, entity framework, dapper technologies, etc.).
Experience with analytical data processing and report creation (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server Analytics Services, Data warehousing, SSRS, Power BI.).
Experience with ELT and ELT skills, including SQL Server Integration Services, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Pipelines.
Experience with reporting technologies, including SQL Server Reporting Services, Power BI (on-premises and Power BI premium services in the cloud).
Azure data engineering experience (e.g. ADF, Synapse, Fabric).
Experience with PowerShell.
Understanding of software development lifecycles.
Strong ability to understand the context for the applications, data sources, and assets and their relation to business objectives.
Ability to work both independently and on a team.
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Growth mindset and a willingness to learn new skills, technologies, and frameworks.
Experience with agile development methodologies.
Education/Experience/Certifications
Required: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university
Required: 4+ years of experience as a data engineer, data developer, or similar role.
A Plus: Previous experience as database administrator.
A Plus: Microsoft certifications applicable to data engineering and data architecture:
Microsoft Certified Database Administrator
Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals
A Plus: Background in property and casualty insurance, financial services, and other relevant industries
