Job Title: Data Center Administrator

Job Description:

  • This role is a fully competent and productive professional contributor who will participate in the maintenance and day-to-day objectives of the Data Center computing environment across the Purdue system with moderate impact. It will oversee Data Center operations, physically secure the centralized computing environment, and monitor and control centralized computing services. This will include coordinating equipment installation, operating/monitoring/maintaining/responding to abnormal conditions in facilities systems, as well as working to develop and maintain operational processes and procedures. This position will also perform preventative maintenance and repairs on general facilities equipment. This role will participate as a "first responder" to any after-hours issues or emergencies. It will help create, implement standards and guidelines. Ensure adequate HVAC, power, and network connectivity to maintain required resources in support of IT infrastructure. Scheduled on-call and nonscheduled call back as necessary.

This position may supervise student and/or temporary Data Center Management staff. The PSC Data Center environment consists of sites across all of Purdue's campuses, including PWL (West Lafayette), PNW (Hammond, Westville), and PFW (Ft. Wayne).

Travel between these campuses to perform activity will be considered a normal job function and will be required of this position. Mileage will be compensated for travel between campuses.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience Needed

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or a related field is required

  • with at least Three (3) years of experience in a Data Center or other mission-critical environment required

  • Also acceptable, Associate's Degree

  • Four (4) to Five (5) years of experience, or High School Diploma and Six (6) to Seven (7) years of experience

  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be accepted.

Preferred:

  • Some experience with construction projects, working with contractors, vendors, consultants, etc. a plus

  • Experience with enterprise and research class computing hardware and software

Skills Needed:

  • Working knowledge of data communications including fiber optics, ethernet, InfiniBand, WANs, VLANs, and IP networks desirable

  • Basic knowledge of:

  • data center infrastructure including 3-phase and single-phase power, HVAC, racking and cabling

  • high voltage filtered systems including UPS, PDU, transformer, generators, etc.

  • CRAC and other cooling technologies, including limited troubleshooting skills

  • Comfortable in consulting with a wide variety of staff, students, contractors, and visitors

  • Must possess good organizational and communications skills

  • Ability to:

  • develop and maintain working relationships with peers, vendors, technical resources and manufacturers

  • work independently
