VIEW JOBS 12/2/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-03-01T00:00 We are an ambitious, well-funded startup with plans to change a $1 trillion-dollar global industry. This is no ordinary startup. We have a proven management team that has done it before, done it before together, and done it before in the travel industry. The company is overflowing with fiercely intelligent people who have tons of energy and an upbeat view of the future. We all act like owners and we get a huge kick out doing great work and doing it fast. We like it, even more, when we come up with a fresh way to solve a problem. Above all, we are devoted to solving customer problems, because that's at the center of everything we do. Do you love data and optimizing it? Do you dream of data and domain models? Do you have mad whiteboard skills? Do you enjoy teaching and leading? We're looking for a full hands-on Data Architect to join our team at Upside! We want someone passionate about the data across our enterprise and who loves to work with engineering teams to utilize the various forms of data to dominate the travel industry. This position is not for operational DBAs. Sorry! ABOUT YOU * You enjoy solving complex problems that may not have one right answer. * You have a strong understanding of extensible data modeling and domain modeling. You know the difference between the two and can explain them to stakeholders. * Your conversant in different data and database technologies and you are comfortable explaining to engineers when and where the best technologies apply. * You have full fluency in traditional database principals and functions, including SQL, cardinality, levels of granularity, normalized vs de-normalized, auditing, and optimization techniques. * You have experience architecting data solutions for both real-time services and business intelligence. * You have demonstrated experience in cloud-native database technologies (SQL and NoSQL) and persistence strategies. AWS preferred. * You have hands-on programming experience, preferably in Java or in Python, and you are comfortable writing code when necessary. * You have a deep understanding of microservice architectures, especially on cloud infrastructure. * You operate at varying levels of abstraction from business strategy to product strategy to high-level technical design to detailed technical design to implementation. You are comfortable teaching. * You have experience in mentoring engineers and playing a strong role in evolving engineering best practices. * You can handle a fast-paced environment for iterative project turnarounds. * You have strong experience in Agile Scrum development practices. * You have a strong educational background with BS / MS in Computer Science or a related area and have demonstrated experience in technical strategy in high scale data environments. * Familiarity and background in the eCommerce, Retail or Travel Industries is a big plus. ABOUT THE GIG * You will drive data and domain architecture for product-wide capabilities that will solve critical customer problems. This involves collaborating actively with other technical leaders across engineering and data science. * You will analyze and develop database architecture and design documentation, including as-is and target conceptual, logical, and physical data models, such as entity-relationship diagrams and data dictionaries. * You will assess current database functionality and identify, recommend, and build enhancements that meet business needs. You will be participating in or leading data design reviews, assessments, and walkthroughs. * You will be hands-on in application development, data modeling, and the development of data ontologies to support the implementation and development of data stores, data lakes, and supporting analytics. * You will lead the development and maintenance of data architecture guiding principles, policies, best practices, reference architectures, and standards across engineering. * You will teach and lead other architects, engineering leaders, and developers so that they understand and support data architecture priorities. * You will work cross-functionally to mitigate data risks including breaking backward compatibility, PII exposure, limiting extensibility and controlling excessive costs. ABOUT ENGINEERING AT UPSIDE We love to ship. We're completely on the CI/CD train, shipping code multiple times a day. We've developed a clustered container environment in AWS using Docker and Kubernetes to manage dozens of microservices written primarily in Node and Go. Our web frontend is written in React/Redux and we're building native iOS and Android apps that take full advantage of the powerful platforms they run on. ABOUT US We are positive, passionate, playful, and always pushing to be better. Our team is a hodgepodge of challenge seekers, travel gurus, startup junkies, and data-miners who see the big picture. YOU WANT TO TALK TO US IF… You are motivated by disrupting the norm. You have a great sense of humor and take your profession seriously, but not yourself. Your entrepreneurial spirit drives your bias for action. You are all about constructive feedback - you can dish it out and you can take it. You thrive in the frenetic energy of a startup. WHAT WE OFFER Competitive salary + equity Full health, vision, and dental coverage 401K plan Open paid time off Impromptu Nerf gun battles Upside Travel is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientations to apply.
