Provide data analytics support to the Federal Aviation Administration, Air Traffic Organization, (ATO), Technical Operations Service Unit (AJW), ATC Facilities and Engineering Directorate (AJW-2), Facilities and Services Group (AJW-24) in Washington, DC.

The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) Facilities and Security Services Group (AJW-24) is responsible for managing the modernization, sustainment, and establishment of air traffic control facilities which support the National Airspace System (NAS).

In addition, the group manages and upgrades the security systems for all facilities in the NAS. The NAS infrastructure includes a variety of Terminal and En Route facilities, such as airport traffic control towers (ATCTs), terminal radar approach control facilities (TRACONs), air route traffic control centers (ARTCCs), communication towers, and unstaffed structures such as radar towers.

The group develops long-term strategic plans, project scopes, and budgets, and manages engineering and construction for projects throughout a facility's lifecycle. In the event of a disruption to air traffic control-such as a natural disaster or necessary maintenance-the group is also responsible for deploying mobile air traffic control assets across the country to maintain NAS operations.

Receives and reviews continuous Adobe form data submissions;

Analyzes data in excel and/or statistical software to identify and develop meaningful information about the quality of projects being planned, designed, and completed by ATCF;

Helps develops and prepares regular reports and briefings; and

Involves correlating and synthesizing multiple data elements for purposes of discerning trends and relationships.

Basic Qualifications

At least 12 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics.

Undergraduate programs in the following areas are acceptable and not limited to: Operations Research, Engineering (usually Industrial Engineering or Construction Management), Science, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or Management Science.

Candidates must be enrolled in a degree program in a relevant discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities would be preferred and allow the candidate to assist with automation of data collection, analysis, and reporting processes.

Graduate Student studying construction management

Statistical methods and packages

SQL databases and database querying languages

Programming such as XML, ETL, or Javascript frameworks

Database design

Data warehousing and business intelligence platforms

Data mining, cleaning, and munging

Data visualization and reporting techniques

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: As an Intern at Amtrak within the IT Safety Services organization, you will apply the foundational principles of data analysis, data management, and project management to make tangible impact on a wide range of complex and transformational IT projects in a real-world rail industry environment. You will work under close supervision of a project/program manager and in collaboration with all levels of stakeholders: from department leaders, to project/program managers, business analysts, and functional leads. Individuals in this role will apply the latest thinking from their college or university coursework to add value to Amtrak organization safety systems. This work is multifaceted and offers the opportunity to apply and build your talent. You will be exposed to safety and IT subject matter experts and assist the organization in developing and executing the end-to-end processes in the data life cycle.
