WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • The preferred working location is the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL.+ Alternate location within the Southern Company service territory may be considered based upon business need and applicant qualifications. Frequent presence in Birmingham, AL, will be required.+ Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.+ This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

JOB SUMMARY

Lead an established group of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers in providing engineering solutions and system subject matter expertise across a wide variety of applications within Southern Company, including, but not limited to geotechnical site investigations, geotechnical engineering, dam safety, geoenvironmental engineering, coal combustion residual (CCR) impoundments and landfills, and earthwork construction support.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required with ability to obtain certification in AL, GA, and MS if not already obtained.+ Bachelor's degree in engineering required.+ Advanced degrees, including M.S., PhD, and/or MBA are desirable, but not required.

Experience :

  • 7+ years professional experience in geotechnical engineering/geoenvironmental engineering (preferred) or strongly related fields (civil, environmental, water resources).+ Experience with electric utility operations preferred but not required.+ Strong working experience with dam safety evaluations and geotechnical engineering.+ Extensive experience with new site development, permitting and construction on large scale (utility, manufacturing, large industry, or other).+ Experience with environmental requirements related to closure of CCR Units and decommissioning of fossil plants.+ Working knowledge of the CCR Rule and compliance obligations.+ Supervision, mentoring and leadership of an engineering team.+ Ability to develop long-term environmental cost forecasts, resource needs and strategies.+ Excellent leadership skills with the proven ability to recruit, develop, and motivate employees.+ Experience with State and Federal utility and environmental regulators across several states, including Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi.+ Experience managing large project budgets and multi-disciplinary project teams.+ Extensive peer network and recognition as a leader.+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.+ Excellent customer relations and conflict resolution skills.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit, develop, and maintain a high-quality technical staff to provide specialized geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering services across Southern Company.+ Oversee the day-to-day work activity (including performance management, coaching and career development) of a group of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers.+ Review, approval and quality assurance of all deliverables.+ Manage external engineering resources (technical and field) to supplement internal staff when needed. Distribute workload appropriately to remain flexible to business demands.+ Serve as primary customer point of contact and make decisions on behalf of the group.+ Integrate and optimize the group's work with peer groups working on air, land and water environmental controls systems.+ Provide engineering consultation related to CCR activities, including pond closures and associated remediation activities.+ Provide geotechnical consulting support to the fossil, hydro, nuclear, and renewables fleet as well as SCS Transmission.+ Oversee the Fossil Dam Safety program, including completion of all required inspections, reports and training (including active and inactive landfills).+ Support active construction projects, including sitework troubleshooting, foundations, and other related needs.+ Prepare internal communications, such as memorandums, presentations, recommendations or otherwise upon request.+ Deliver oral presentations to management and stakeholder groups, as needed.+ Provide safety training, technical and strategic direction, performance management, and continuing technical and personal development to a highly skilled, multidisciplinary staff, including senior level subject matter experts.+ Effectively represent the interests and positions of the Southern Company in strategically important external forums and stakeholder groups including providing expert testimony in legal proceedings.+ Identify and communicate emerging regulatory matters of importance to the company.+ Lead in-house teams and stakeholder groups in the identification and resolution of technical and regulatory matters.
