The Cytogenetics Manager has the overall responsibility for the planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of all technical and/or operational activities and personnel within Cytogenetics in the western US locations. The Cytogenetics Manager is responsible for performing duties to meet quality assurance, safety and accreditation requirements in the Cytogenetics laboratory. The Laboratory Manager also oversees a variety of projects that can be assigned by the Site Director or Medical Laboratory Director.

This is a management position responsible for the western US operations of the Cytogenetics. It is distinguished from the next higher-level position of Cytogenetics Director of Laboratory Operations, which is a senior management classification with enterprise responsibility for Cytogenetics. It is distinguished from the next lower classification of Laboratory Supervisor which is a supervisory classification with responsibility for overseeing the daily activities of the Cytogenetics laboratory staff on assigned shifts.

Responsibilities:

Core Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of and in the absence of the Site Director or Medical Laboratory Director, the Cytogenetics Manager ensures adequate performance of all laboratory operations and procedures within Cytogenetics.

  • Presents data and/or information across all levels including the lab, department, division, and corporate, and proficiently answers questions from all groups of staff, managers, and clients.

  • Recommends and endorses test methods to include validation, documentation and implementation of test systems.

  • Initiates and monitors quality assurance programs for the laboratory; assures compliance with regulations.

  • Reports any problem cases and/or abnormal findings to the Medical Laboratory Director to ensure timely resolution and/or follow up.

  • Ensures the quality of service provided by the department meets the requirements of both internal and external clients; ensures all internal and external requests are resolved or addressed.

  • Ensures Federal, State, and corporate standards, policies, and guidelines for the efficient management of the laboratory are being followed.

  • Ensures quality control and compliance procedures are followed and QC reports are up to date.

  • Ensures that Medical Director or designee receives all documents due for annual review or pertain to newly instituted process changes for required review and signature.

  • Oversees, plans, and prepares for inspections in conjunction with the Laboratory Supervisor.

  • Sets department objectives and performance goals; monitors personnel and resource utilization on an ongoing basis and makes adjustments in staffing to facilitate achievement of the goals and objectives.

  • Oversees and/or participates in personnel management activities for the department; selects and hires personnel; conducts or guides supervisor in selection interviews, hiring, motivating and training staff.

  • Conducts or guides supervisor in performance appraisals, documenting deficiencies, developing plans for improvement and counseling employees.

  • Monitors laboratory work performance to determine staff resources utilization; reviews monthly work statistics and budget reports; establishes work performance standards and adjusts staffing levels as needed.

  • Evaluates and makes determinations on new laboratory equipment to stay abreast of new technology; assess and selects vendors for materials and services used by the department; evaluates various test methodology for use in the department.

  • Ensures that a safe working environment is maintained and that safe work practices are employed.

  • Maintains advanced knowledge of CAP/CLIA requirements and is knowledgeable with the specialty requirements within those organizations for assigned discipline.

  • Accountable for the operation of a 24 hour department, including responding to emergencies, and attendance at meetings outside of working hours as needed.

Additional Responsibilities (may be assigned):

  • May be assigned Core or Additional duties of a Laboratory Supervisor.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Director or Medical Laboratory Director.

Position Objectives:

  • Achieves desired level of competency and accuracy for the main department processes and responsibilities of assigned position, as defined in established SOP's, within 6 months.

  • Monitors and works to ensure department meets or exceeds productivity expectations.

  • Monitors and works to ensure department reports quality results with limited errors.

  • Monitors and works to ensure department personnel maintains satisfactory results on all department specific competency assessments.

  • Works productively and efficiently to achieve company and departmental goals.

  • Effectively schedules and manages resources to meet department goals.

  • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff.

  • Maintains thorough knowledge and shows demonstrated support of NeoGenomics Laboratories core values, safety, compliance, and Company policies and procedures.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences.

Experience:

  • At least six (6) years of experience in Cytogenetics.

  • At least two (2) years of supervisory experience in a Cytogenetics lab.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Advanced understanding of general laboratory techniques with emphasis on Cytogenetics specific techniques

  • Ability to make sound decisions under stressful situations

  • Proven leadership and problem solving skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communication with all employees and clients

  • Strong computer skills to accomplish tasks

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently

  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards

  • Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual

  • Good visual acuity including color perception required for certain departments

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Certificate Compliance Requirements:

  • Nationally: ASCP certification for the assigned specialty
  • CA: California State License limited license CLSP(CG)
  • Appropriate State License
