Job Summary* Work in clinical laboratory setting. * Follow the laboratory standard operating procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, maintaining records of tests. * Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. * Adhere to the Jab's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance. * Follow the lab's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. * Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance of test results and immediately notify the supervisor or director. * Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established specifications.Duties and Responsibilities* Perform technical laboratory testing following College of American Pathology (CAP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical laboratory Improvement Amendments (CUA), Joint commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare (JCAHO), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulatory policies. * Preparation and maintenance of prenatal biological specimens for cell culture. * Monitor cultures for cellular growth. * Select cultures that are appropriate to yield sufficient metaphases for analysis. * Process appropriate cultures by the designated harvest procedure. * Harvest cultured cells for chromosome analysis manually or with the automated robotic system. * Responsible for laboratory log, statistics and abnormal reports. * Maintain culture and harvest records. * Perform banding techniques to produce analyzable metaphases. * Microscopic analysis of required number of metaphases for diagnosis. * Select appropriate cells and perform microscope analysis. * Computer Image capture and karyotype analysis. * Molecular cytogenetic techniques to perform fluorescence in Situ Hybridization (FISH) when indicated. * Molecular cytogenetic techniques to perform Array comparative Genomic Hybridization. * Coordinate case flow. * Inventory record keeping. * Check charts for data accuracy. * Assist supervisor with technical issues. * Maintain a safe and efficient working environment by performing equipment checks, cleaning work area, and monitor temperatures in accordance with regulatory agencies and hospital policies. Recognize and troubleshoot malfunctions of advanced technological equipment and initiate corrective action. * Attend lab quality control and safety meetings to be informed of current lab and hospital safety policies. * Maintain clinical competency and current professional knowledge by reading relevant journal articles and attending trainings.Education:Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or medical laboratory technologyMinimum Related Experience:One to two years of previous laboratory work experience is preferred.
