Job Summary

Individual contributor responsible for the overall management business development analysis and monitoring of a highly complex book of Cyber, MPL, Tech E&O and Media business. Recognized as a technical expert in an underwriting specialty. Under general management direction works within broad limits of authority on assignments requiring a high degree of technical complexity and coordination. May have regional industry segment or company-wide scope.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Works on highly complex underwriting risks employing diagnostic and systematic analysis to assess acceptability. Develops specialized endorsement language for highly complex risk.

  • Determines appropriate pricing of complex risks for assigned book of business based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements and with little oversight needed from superiors.

  • Makes recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy.

  • Analyzes quality quantity and profitability of highly complex risks underwritten; prepares and presents reports to management.

  • Markets products and services through agencies or through the brokerage community and makes field visits.

  • Develops and maintains agency and/or broker relationships with large producers within the assigned territory to reach positive and profitable outcomes on complex high-risk business.

  • Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.

  • Mentors and guides less experienced underwriters and assists in the development of underwriting training.

  • Utilizes advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities. Responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations.

  • Reporting Relationship, Manager or above

Skills Knowledge and Abilities

  • Advanced technical expertise underwriting skill and high level of knowledge of Cyber, MPL, Tech E&O, and Media insurance and underwriting principles practices and procedures.

  • Strong communication negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.

  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.

  • Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.

  • Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.

  • Typically a minimum five years underwriting experience.

Job Summary: The position encompasses retail E&O and Cyber underwriting for the Markel Assurance Midwest Region located in Chicago, IL. The focus of the position includes reviewing, analyzing, accepting, and declining risks to ensure profitability for Markel. The incumbent will communicate with underwriting management and national E&O and Cyber product line leaders on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate. The Senior Underwriter will review exposures, terms, conditions and pricing while underwriting new and renewal business and handle related servicing. They will also implement corrective measures on renewal accounts as needed and monitor producers for profitability and production. In addition, they will market products to producers by coordinating marketing plan with regional and national marketing associates as well as participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required. * Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years plus of experience in profitable retail E&O and Cyber liability underwriting required. * Existing retail relationships in the Midwest. * Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of increasing responsibility. * Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and skilled presentation aptitude. * Technologically savvy; proficient in Word, Outlook, & Excel. * Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills. * Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment. * Flexible to travel, approximately 25%.
